Like mother, like daughter.
Fernanda Torres scored Brazil’s second Oscar nomination for acting on Thursday for her performance in I’m Still Here, which also scored a surprise Best Picture nomination. Over 25 years ago, Fernanda Montenegro, her mother, was the first Brazilian actress to be nominated in the category for her role in 1998’s Central Station.
In her Golden Globes speech, Torres honored her mother after winning best dramatic movie actress.
“And this is proof that art can endure through life, even in difficult moments,” Torres added of her win, saying that I’m Still Here is “a film that helped us to think how to survive in tough times.”

1 hr 29 min ago

“I often get asked what I would say to my younger self,” she continued. “Well today there’s nothing to be said. She is smiling, beaming, glowing from ear to ear. That speaks volumes.”

Zoe Saldaña Feels ‘Joy’ Over Her First Oscar Nomination
3 hr 7 min ago
The Emilia Pérez actress, 46, reveled in her first-ever Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress on Thursday, expressing “gratitude and joy” in a statement released after the exciting news.
“I don’t think I can properly express the deep levels of gratitude and joy I feel for the recognition Emilia Pérez has been given. Being part of the beautiful family Jacques created was a dream and every single person involved poured their love into telling this powerful story,” Saldaña said in her statement.
“I’m especially grateful to Karla, whose bravery and talent brought so much depth and authenticity to ‘Emilia.’ It’s a bittersweet moment as our community in Los Angeles is processing the heartbreaking losses from the ongoing fires – homes, schools, businesses and entire neighborhoods. My heart is with all those affected and I’m sending endless love and appreciation to our fearless first responders and everyone working to help rebuild our city.”
Isabella Rossellini Reacts to Her First Oscar Nomination: ‘Wish My Parents Were Alive to Celebrate with Me’
3 hr 54 min ago
The Conclave Best Supporting Actress Oscar nominee, 72, discussed being the child of two screen legends — three-time Oscar-winning actress Ingrid Bergman and filmmaker Roberto Rossellini — in a statement released after she learned of her nomination.
“When I was young, I was always identified as the daughter of Ingrid Bergman and Roberto Rossellini. As I’ve gotten older, this doesn’t happen as frequently; and, I miss it especially today. I wish my parents were alive to celebrate with me this great honor,” she said in her statement.
“And, also, today, with this joy, my mind can’t help lingering in the beyond to David Lynch. Our collaboration was key to my understanding of the art of acting. It is my past, all that I have in me, that I brought to my interpretation of Sister Agnes in the film Conclave, working under the clear, sharp direction of Edward Berger his incredible cast and crew, especially the incomparable Ralph Fiennes. Thank you to the Academy. I am very honored.”
Adrien Brody Says He’ll ‘Cherish’ Oscar Nomination After Experiencing ‘Peaks and Valleys’ of Career
4 hr 16 min ago
In 2003, Brody’s portrayal of a Holocaust survivor in The Pianist made the 29-year-old the youngest man ever to win the Best Actor Oscar. On Jan. 23, Brody, now 51, scored his second Best Actor nomination for starring as a post-World War II refugee in the movie The Brutalist.
“Thank you to all my peers and colleagues at the Academy for this extraordinary honor. For almost four decades, I’ve experienced the peaks and valleys of being an artist. It’s given me perspective and a tremendous appreciation and respect for this moment,” Brody said in his statement after learning of the nomination.
“Portraying Laszlo Toth, and representing the hardships and yearnings of so many, including the very struggles of my own family, has rekindled my own sense of being and belonging, and believing again. Sharing this profound experience with our talented and dedicated cast and crew on The Brutalist has been a rare gift that I am endlessly grateful for. Thank you for honoring us all with this recognition, I am only here through the support of many; I am truly humbled and will cherish this momentous occasion forever.”

“Being nominated for an Oscar is an incredible honor and these last few months have been beyond my wildest dreams,” Moore said in the statement. “Truly there are no words to fully express my joy and overwhelming gratitude for this recognition. Not only for me but for what this film represents. I am deeply humbled.”
“This is a time of incredible contrasts and right now, my heart is with my friends, family, neighbors, and community here in LA,” she added. “The fires have devastated so many lives but to see the way our community has united leaves me in awe of the resilience and compassion that defines us, and this moment is a reminder of how incredible we are when we stand together.”

The pop superstar posted a moving update on Instagram for her millions of fans to share how touched she is by her Best Supporting Actress nomination for Wicked.
“picking my head up in between sobs to say thank you so much to @theacademy for this unfathomable recognition,” she wrote in her caption to a carousel of images, that included a photo of her as a child dressed as The Wizard of Oz’s Dorothy.
“i cannot stop crying, to no one’s surprise. i’m humbled and deeply honored to be in such brilliant company and sharing this with tiny ari who sat and studied Judy Garland singing Somewhere Over the Rainbow just before the big, beautiful bubble entered,” she added. “i don’t quite have all my words yet, i’m still trying to breathe. but thank you. oh my goodness, thank you.”
Other Major Snubs: Pamela Anderson, Denzel Washington and More
5 hr 3 min ago
Pamela Anderson, 57, has been racking up honors for her turn as Shelly, a Las Vegas dancer who finds herself at a crossroads when her live show is canceled, in The Last Showgirl. First came the Gotham Awards nomination, then the Golden Globe nod, which was followed by a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination. The Baywatch star has mesmerized critics and awards voters alike. Alas, not Oscar voters, who didn’t include her in the Best Actress category.
Denzel Washington, 70, was an early awards season favorite, landing on several Oscar nomination prediction lists. But the Best Supporting Actor race proved to be ultra-competitive. So competitive, in fact, that Washington — who earned rave reviews as the scheming villain Macrinus in Ridley Scott’s Gladiator II — was edged out altogether.
For a roundup of the most shocking snubs, head on over to PEOPLE’s list.
Emilia Pérez Becomes the Most Nominated Non-English-Language Film in History
5 hr 11 min ago
Jacques Audiard’s acclaimed Netflix musical drama has beat Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) and Roma (2018) to become the most-nominated non-English-language film in Oscars history.
Both Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Roma were nominated for 10 Oscars each in their respective years. Emilia Pérez has come out ahead with a staggering 13 nominations.
On top of a Best Picture nomination and nods for its stars Karla Sofía Gascón and Zoe Saldaña, the film also received recognition in the some of the technical categories, including Best Sound and Best Editing.
Best Actress Nominees Are All First-Timers Except for Cynthia Erivo
5 hr 20 min ago
Four of the five women nominated for Best Actress at this year’s Oscars ceremony are first-time nominees.
Cynthia Erivo (Wicked) previously received a nomination in the same category for her performance as Harriet Tubman in 2019’s Harriet; that year, Erivo, 38, also received a nomination in the Best Original Song category for Harriet’s “Stand Up.”
Demi Moore, who won a Golden Globe Award on Jan. 5 for her performance in The Substance, is a first-time Academy Award nominee, as is Emilia Pérez’s Karla Sofía Gascón, Anora’s Mikey Madison and I’m Still Here’s Fernanda Torrres.
Torres, 59, also took home a Golden Globe on Jan. 5 for her work in I’m Still Here in that ceremony’s best performance by a leading actress in a drama category.
Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers and Queer Get Zero Nominations
5 hr 23 min ago
The Italian director, 53, failed to get any nods for both his 2024 films: the sports drama Challengers and the romantic drama Queer.
Starring Zendaya, Mike Faist and Josh O’Connor as tennis champions in a years-spanning love triangle, Challengers was nominated in four categories at the recent 2025 Golden Globes, taking home the prize for best original score (Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross). This year’s Best Original Score hopefuls at the Oscars include The Brutalist, Conclave, Emilia Pérez, Wicked and The Wild Robot.
Challengers is also up for best original screenplay, best editing, best score and best song at the upcoming Critics Choice Awards.
Queer garnered a best actor nod for star Daniel Craig at the Critics Choice Awards, set for Feb. 7, as well as at the Globes, though Craig, 56, was also shut out of a recognition at the upcoming BAFTA Awards. The film was also nominated for both the Golden Lion and the Queer Lion at the 2024 Venice International Film Festival.
Emilia Pérez Star Karla Sofía Gascón Makes History
5 hr 42 min ago
Emilia Pérez star Karla Sofía Gascón just made history as the first out trans Best Actress Oscar nominee. She was also the first out transgender actress to be nominated in a film category at the 2025 Golden Globe Awards.
Aside from winning best actress at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival last May alongside costars Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez and Adriana Paz, Gascón, 52, is also up for two awards at the upcoming Critics Choice Awards on Feb. 7, including best actress, and leading actress at the 2025 BAFTA Awards on Feb. 16, among other accolades.
10 Films Make the Cut for Oscars 2025’s Best Picture Category
5 hr 53 min ago
Ten films are officially vying for the most coveted award at this year’s Academy Awards: the Best Picture Oscar. The 10 nominees are: Anora, The Brutalist. A Complete Unknown, Conclave, Dune: Part Two, Emilia Perez, I’m Still Here, Nickel Boys, The Substance and Wicked.
Nicole Kidman and Angelina Jolie Snubbed for Best Actress
5 hr 59 min ago
Nicole Kidman, 57, gave one of the year’s most dynamic performances as Romy Mathis, a married tech company CEO who begins an affair with a young intern (Harris Dickinson). It’s a juicy role that allows the Oscar winner to show her considerable range: As Romy, she’s tightly-wound one minute and reckless the next. Though Kidman was nominated for a Golden Globe as well as a Gotham Award — and received best actress honors from the National Board of Review — the Academy overlooked her performance in a highly competitive year.
In Maria, director Pablo Larraín’s drama about tragic opera diva Maria Callas, Jolie, 49, acts with a capital A: she emotes, she sings, she swans around in fabulous costumes. While promoting the fictionalized biopic — the type that’s normally catnip to Academy voters — Jolie talked about the grueling prep work she undertook: taking voice lessons with a coach and performing in different languages. Ultimately, though, it wasn’t enough to land her in one of the five best actress slots.
Moana 2 Left Out of Best Animated Feature Category
6 hr 3 min ago
Despite earning a Golden Globe nomination earlier in the awards cycle, Disney’s blockbuster sequel starring Auliʻi Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson was shut out of the Best Animated Feature category. In its place was Flow, Inside Out 2, Memoir of a Snail, Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Foul and The Wild Robot. The first Moana film, released in 2016, scored two Oscar nominations: Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for “How Far I’ll Go,” which had music and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda (who did not return for the sequel).
Selena Gomez Misses Out on Supporting Actress Nomination
6 hr 9 min ago
The “Love You to Love Me” singer, 32, who has a pivotal role as the wife of the titular character in the Netflix musical Emilia Pérez, didn’t make the cut in the Best Supporting Actress category despite being recognized by the Golden Globes. Gomez’s costar Zoe Saldaña did earn a Supporting Actress nomination for the award-winning film, which took top honors at the Golden Globes in early January.
Ariana Grande Becomes an Oscar-Nominated Actress
6 hr 13 min ago
The 31-year-old pop superstar, who began as a child star on television, earned her first-ever Oscar nomination Thursday, Jan. 23, with recognition in the Best Supporting Actress category for her performance as Glinda in Wicked. Grande’s costar Cynthia Erivo previously said in an interview with Variety that she “will raise hell” if Grande “does not get her nomination” for her debut film role, adding, “It’s a really f—ing hard job to jump into the middle of something like this and have it be your first time.”
Oscar-Nominated Songs Won’t Be Performed Live During Show
7 hr 18 min ago
Before the nominations are revealed, the Academy announced that the upcoming ceremony will “move away” from live performances of Oscar-nominated songs.
Previously, each of the nominated songs was performed on stage during the telecast. Remember Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s heated performance of “Shallow” from A Star Is Born? What about Ryan Gosling’s viral rendition of Barbie‘s “I’m Just Ken”?
“This year the best original song category presentation will move away from live performances and will be focused on the songwriters,” read a letter sent to Academy members. “We will celebrate their artistry through personal reflections from the teams who bring these songs to life. All of this, and more, will uncover the stories and inspiration behind this year’s nominees.”

7 hr 18 min ago
In a letter sent to Academy members on Wednesday, Jan 22, Academy CEO Bill Kramer and president Janet Yang promised that the 97th ceremony will honor the city of Los Angeles, in response to South California’s devastating wildfires, by “showcasing its beauty and resilience.”
“We will reflect on the recent events while highlighting the strength, creativity, and optimism that defines Los Angeles and our industry,” the letter read.
“There is so much more in store, including powerful musical moments that connect film’s rich history to its bold and inspiring future.”
