Sinners Earns a Rare A from Audiences as It Dethrones A Minecraft Movie to Top the Box Office

- Michael B. Jordan’s new vampire horror movie Sinners made movie history as the first horror film to receive an A CinemaScore in 35 years
- CinemaScore is a marketing research company that asks moviegoers around the country to take a survey on a movie’s opening night in theaters and rank it from A to F
- Sinners, which also made $45.6 million at the domestic box office during its opening weekend, also stars Delroy Lindo, Miles Caton, Hailee Steinfeld, Jack O’Connell and Jayme Lawson
Michael B. Jordan’s new movie is a hit at the box office and with audiences.
Sinners, the 1930s Mississippi-set vampire horror movie that stars Jordan in twin performances, replaced A Minecraft Movie at the top of the domestic box office as it grossed $45.6 million over the weekend following its April 18. The video game adaptation made an additional $41.3 million during its third weekend in theaters.
Sinners hit another industry benchmark; Warner Bros. announced on Sunday, April 20, that the movie is the first horror film to earn an A CinemaScore in over 35 years. CinemaScore, a marketing research company, polls moviegoers across the country the first night a movie plays in theaters and asks those surveyed to fill out ballot cards that grade a movie anywhere between A to F to determine is final score.
Other recent movies to receive an A- Cinemascore or higher include Warfare, The Unbreakable Boy, Rule Breakers, Paddington in Peru, The Last Supper, The King of Kings, Dog Man and Bob Trevino Likes It, according to the company’s website. A Minecraft Movie, which had a record breaking opening weekend at the box office and is currently the highest grossing film of 2025 so far, received a B+ CinemaScore.
Sinners follows an ill-fated day in 1932 Mississippi, when Jordan’s twin characters Smoke and Stack return to their home town after several years away to open up a night club at an abandoned mill with money they stole from gangsters. The pair recruit their cousin Sammie (Miles Caton) and other musicians to play the blues at their club’s opening night, which grows into a supernaturally attractive destination for a vampire (Jack O’Connell) traveling through the area.

Hailee Steinfeld, Delroy Lindo, Wunmi Mosaka, Jayme Lawson, Omar Benson Miller and Li Jun Li also costarred in the movie, which Jordan made with his frequent collaborator Ryan Coogler.
Lawson, who portrays a singer named Pearline in Sinners, shared a number of photos of her posing with the movie’s cast to Instagram on Sunday, April 20 to celebrate the movie’s success over the Easter holiday weekend.
“It was/is/and always will be A FAMILY AFFAIR ❤️🥰! Happy Easter/Resurrection Sunday everyone,” Lawson, 27, wrote in the caption to her post. “Go with your peoples to see #SINNERS in IMAX. you’ll be alright…maybe😏.”
