Designer reveals the âmeaningfulâ message behind Meghan Markleâs ‘love pendant’

If you want to know what Meghan Markle is thinking, just look at her jewelry.
While arranging flowers on her Netflix show, “With Love, Meghan,” the Duchess of Sussex can be seen sporting her Sophie Lis Love Pendant — a piece she first wore in 2020 and has brought out multiple times since.
Inspired by 19th century French poet Rosemonde Gérard’s “The Eternal Song,” the diamond- and ruby-studded necklace reads “+ qu’hier” and “- que demain,” reflecting the phrase, “I love you more today than yesterday but less than tomorrow.”
The London jeweler tells Page Six Style the pendant symbolizes “ever growing love,” adding, “It was particularly special when Meghan first got photographed wearing that piece, as we gave 10% from each sale to a dog charity I support called Wild at Heart, based in Notting Hill.”
Markle, 43, has turned to Lis’ jewelry for some of the most important occasions in her life, wearing a pair of the designer’s Fallen Star Hoop Earrings for her final day as a working royal in March 2020.
Shaped like twin North Stars, the earrings symbolize “protection from evil,” according to Lis.
“Meghan was a fan of us right from the beginning. She became aware of our brand just before she moved to the US, but there was no gifting — she definitely bought her pieces,” she says.
“She’s always been a great supporter and I’m very grateful for her raising awareness of the brand, especially as the storytelling behind each piece is meaningful. Those Fallen Star Earrings are meant to offer guidance and direction; it’s such a nice thought to follow the star.”
Princess Eugenie owns a pair of the same starry hoops, as does actress (and longtime Markle BFF) Abigail Spencer.
Lis’ designs draw inspiration from Earth’s elements, from the sun and moon to the stars.
Most recently, the jeweler launched a stunning range of sparkling mushroom earrings and pendants.
“They bring happiness with a nod to the psychedelic ’60s,” she says. “The Mushroom Collection is a tribute to the extraordinary power of nature; this new line captures the essence of healing and well-being.”
She was inspired by close pal Jess Clark, who runs the mushroom supplement company Mother Made, and says the jewelry has brought the mushrooms “alive.” (Ellie Goulding recently rolled out her own mushroom supplement company, Everystate, so it seems Lis is in great company.)
“My jewelry has always been inspired by things beyond our understanding — the beauty of our world and infinite possibility of the unknown,” Lis says.
“This collection is aimed at bringing joy and empowerment, whilst serving as a gentle reminder that magic can be found in the most unexpected places all around us.”
Plus, she adds of the “uplifting” range, “Anything that makes you smile and give you extra energy can’t be a bad thing.”
