Does ’28 Years Later’ Have a Post-Credit Scene? What to Know About the Film’s Ending

The post-apocalyptic thriller 28 Years Later marks the long-awaited return of the horror franchise with a bone-chilling plot and interesting new characters.
Alfie Williams, Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ralph Fiennes and Edvin Ryding lead the cast in the film, which serves as the follow-up to 2002’s 28 Days Later and 2007’s 28 Weeks Later. Cillian Murphy serves as an executive producer on the project; however, he does not appear in the film to reprise his character, Jim, whom he portrayed in 28 Days Later.
With all of the franchise’s twists and turns, fans heading to the theater to see the latest installment have been filled with curiosity about whether or not there is a post-credit scene at the end of the film. Us Weekly reveals if you should stick around after the credits roll.
Is There a Post-Credit Scene in ‘28 Years Later’?
There is no post-credit scene at the end of 28 Years Later. Instead, the cliffhanger ending of the film sets up the plot for 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. It will be the fourth installment in the franchise and was filmed back-to-back with 28 Years Later.
What Is ‘28 Years Later’ About?
The official synopsis for 28 Years Later says, “A group of survivors of the rage virus live on a small island. When one of the group leaves the island on a mission into the mainland, he discovers secrets, wonders and horrors that have mutated not only the infected but other survivors.”
The film is set 28 years after the first Rage virus rapidly spread through Europe. Viewers are introduced to the character Sir Jimmy Crystal, a cult leader who survived the first outbreak. This particular plot point is rather important, as Jimmy, who is played by Jack O’Connell, will be an integral part of 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple.
When Will ‘28 Years Later: The Bone Temple’ Be Released?
Fans of the horror films will not have to wait very long to see the next one, as 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple is slated for release on January 16, 2026.
Will Cillian Murphy Appear in ‘28 Years Later: The Bone Temple’?
Much to the delight of many fans, producer and director Danny Boyle revealed plans to bring back Murphy in 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. Boyle directed both 28 Days Later and 28 Years Later, while Nia DaCosta directed the soon-to-be released 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple.
“He’s an executive producer on this and was enormously supportive. He appears briefly in Nia’s film,” Boyle told Variety in June 2025. “I don’t think that’s giving too much away, and our plan is that he will be an enormous character in the third film in the way that Jack O’Connell’s character — who you see briefly at the end of the first film — is an enormous character with Ralph Fiennes in the next film.”
