- On the Thursday, Aug. 28 episode of the Are You a Charlotte? podcast, Kristin Davis recalls a cast trip to meet Cher and get permission for the song’s use
- The memorable night, and the song’s place in the episode, have made it a track Davis cherishes
Kristin Davis is looking back at the storyline that led to her meeting one of her favorites.
Chatting with Sex and the City screenwriter Cindy Chupack on the Thursday, Aug. 28 episode of the Are You a Charlotte? podcast, the actress looked back at Charlotte’s relationship with Stephan the pastry chef, who had qualities that led Charlotte to question his sexuality.
“When we were in bed and he puts on Cher… do you remember that we had to go to a Cher concert to get permission?” Davis asks Chupack.
“Yes, and we all went,” Chupack recalled. “And she came and talked to us before the show.”
Davis adds, “And I touched her, and she was so fragile.”

Chupack points out that Cher was already wearing her costume for the show, which included a sizable Viking-style headpiece.
“Which, on stage, looks impressive, but in person, it’s like ‘Wow,’ ” Chupack says.
“I know, in person you’re like, ‘I can’t believe you have to wear this,’ ” Davis recalls, adding. “She was so kind to us.”
Their opportunity to chat came as opener Cyndi Lauper performed. Davis remembers the night as “incredible.”
“It was at Madison Square Garden, and it was incredible. It was when she had this song that we get to use in the show, ‘Believe.’ It’s an old song now, but then it was brand new,” Davis explains.
“We would have been happy to go to the concert anyway, but, yeah, there was some connection where…” Chupack trailed.
“I think we think we had to get her seal of approval, which is totally fine because we got to meet Cher, which is incredible. Iconic,” Davis says. “Because I grew up watching The Sonny and Cher Show, and I don’t care if I’m dating myself.”
“It’s one of those experiences where you’re like, ‘Okay, I can’t believe this is my life… insane,’ ” Chupack says.
“And I love that song so much! Whenever it comes on the radio, I’m so happy. Makes me so happy because it reminds me of Butterman, reminds me of Cher, reminds me of us,” Davis concludes.
