President Donald Trump visited New York City on the 24th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terror attacks, making an appearance at Yankee Stadium hours after delivering remarks at the Pentagon.
The president, 79, returned to his former home on Thursday, Sept. 11, to watch the New York Yankees take on the Detroit Tigers. Pregame ceremonies honored the victims and heroes of the terrorist attacks, which claimed the lives of nearly 3,000 people in 2001.
Trump appeared in the Steinbrenner family box at 6:57 p.m. local time, where he was met with both cheers and pronounced boos. (The open-air seats are separated from the rest of the stadium through bulletproof glass.) Trump spent much of the game speaking with Yankees president Randy Levine.
Trump later signed a baseball and applauded Aaron Judge’s home run, waving his arms while speaking with box guests before taking a seat. He was joined by Attorney General Pam Bondi and Bill O’Reilly.
Shortly after, a New York Fire Department (FDNY) member sang the National Anthem at 7:05 p.m., when Trump’s face was shown on the screen, once again inviting intense cheers and boos. This time in response, the president smiled.
Trump’s appearance comes on the heels of Charlie Kirk’s death on Wednesday, Sept. 10. The 31-year-old media personality, who founded the conservative organizing group Turning Point USA, was shot during an event at Utah Valley University.
The Yankees held a moment of silence ahead of Wednesday’s game to honor Kirk.
Though many lawmakers have reportedly been on edge since Kirk’s killing, which contributed to an unnerving pattern of political violence in the United States, Trump moved forward with his plan to attend the outdoor baseball game.
The Wall Street Journal reported that additional security measures were put into place for the president’s visit.

During remarks at the Pentagon on Thursday, Trump announced plans to posthumously award Kirk the Presidential Medal of Freedom, a largely ceremonial honor that is handed out to civilians at the president’s discretion.
“We miss him greatly, yet I have no doubt that Charlie’s voice and the courage he put into the hearts of countless people, especially young people, will live on,” Trump said.
