Ryan Guzman Reveals How Jennifer Lopez Ended Up Starting His Instagram 10 Years Ago (Exclusive)

NEED TO KNOW
- 9-1-1 star Ryan Guzman is reflecting on filming 2015′ The Boy Next Door with Jennifer Lopez
- Guzman revealed that his costar is responsible for starting his Instagram account
- “My very first post is because of her,” the actor shares
Ryan Guzman’s Instagram account has an unforgettable origin story.
While discussing the return of 9-1-1, which kicked off season 9 with a thrilling two-part premiere on Thursday, Oct. 9 and Oct. 16, Guzman, 38, also spoke with PEOPLE about the 10th anniversary of The Boy Next Door, the thriller he starred in alongside Jennifer Lopez in 2015.
For the actor, though, the project doesn’t feel like it’s already a decade old. “I didn’t know it was the 10 … it is 10 years since that movie?” he says. “Where has time gone?”
In the film, Guzman plays a 19-year-old with a dark past who moves in next door to Lopez’s character, a mom who is going through a rough patch in her marriage. Working on it is memorable to the actor for many reasons, including it marking his Instagram debut thanks to his famous costar.
The 9-1-1 actor reveals that Lopez, now 56, was surprised to find out he didn’t have an Instagram while they were doing press for the film. “I think I just had a Facebook or something, and she had asked me what’s my Instagram handle or whatnot, and I just kind of had a blank face. She goes, ‘You know what? No, I’ll set it up for you,’ ” he recalls.
“She did, and my very first post is because of her, I think we were doing press for The Boy Next Door. She was in charge of it for a little bit,” Guzman says. “It’s such a crazy thing to now think about that Jennifer Lopez is the one that started my Instagram.”
The first post currently on Guzman’s Instagram is a black-and-white photo shared in August 2015 in promotion of his role on Heroes: Reborn, but it’s unclear if that’s his official first post that fans have Lopez to thank for.

In addition to setting up his Instagram account, Lopez also inspired Guzman with her ability to balance so many different roles at one time. “It’s one thing to see a superstar do what they do, but to watch an individual maintain a level of entrepreneurship in so many different lanes, whether it be acting — I think she was writing a book at the same time, she was also curating a reality show with dancing, I believe … She’s doing her music and then I think she was trying to get ready for another movie — this was all happening at the same time as filming,” he remembers.
The Pretty Little Liars actor adds, “To me, it was such a huge indicator that you can do it and this is how you do it. You’re able to delegate a lot of the hands-on stuff to people you trust.”
Watching Lopez “show off her creativity in these different lanes was very inspiring,” Guzman continues. “It was just being a fly on the wall and a relatively new actor back then, I was just trying to soak in as much as I can, and I was just very grateful of the opportunity.”
