- “I’m just saying, I want that out there as an idea,” the actor teased

George Clooney thinks AARP Magazine should draw inspiration from one of PEOPLE’s most iconic franchises.
While presenting the Best Actor, TV award to his former ER costar Noah Wyle at the AARP Movies for Grownups Awards on Saturday, Jan. 10, Clooney, 64, took a moment to make a joke that nodded to PEOPLE’s Sexiest Man Alive.
“By the way, AARP, just a thought — your magazine, once a year, you [should] do the Sexiest Man Still Alive,” he teased.
“I’m just saying, I want that out there as an idea,” continued Clooney, who won the Best Actor award for his film, Jay Kelly.
As for someone Clooney thinks would be a perfect fit for AARP Magazine‘s hypothetical “Sexiest Man Still Alive” title? “I would nominate Noah Wyle as the first guy,” he said.

Clooney was named PEOPLE’s Sexiest Man Alive in 1997. At the time, his ER costar Laura Innes said, “The rap on George is that he’s this rake, this guy’s guy. That’s true, but he is also a dear, loyal friend who would do anything for you. It’s almost like being a family member.”
Later, in 2006, Clooney became the second celebrity to nab the honor of being PEOPLE’s Sexiest Man Alive twice. The first was Brad Pitt, who received his inaugural honor in 1995, and his second five years later in 2000.

PEOPLE’s most recent Sexiest Man Alive is Jonathan Bailey. The actor, 37, made history as the first openly gay man to receive the title.
Others who have been named Sexiest Man Alive in years past include John Krasinski (2024), Patrick Dempsey (2023), Chris Evans (2022), Paul Rudd (2021) and Michael B. Jordan (2020).
The AARP’s Movies for Grownups Awards, hosted by Alan Cumming, honors movies and television series that spotlight people 50 and older.
The event raises funds for the AARP Foundation, which works to help older adults across the United States.
Alongside Clooney and Wyle, some other winners this year included Kathy Bates and Laura Dern, and Adam Sandler was honored with the Movies for Grownups Career Achievement Award.
During his introduction for Wyle, Clooney reflected on their friendship over the years since their ER days, and Wyle did the same during his acceptance speech.
When it came time for Clooney to accept his award, Wyle praised the star’s latest film, and as Clooney spoke about receiving his honor, he got in jokes about his age — including a jab at younger actor Timothée Chalamet.
