James Van Der Beek and wife Kimberly renewed their vows from bed days before his death
James Van Der Beek and his wife renewed their vows just two days before the actor died of cancer.
“Our friends got us new rings, filled our bedroom with flowers and candles and we renewed our vows from bed,” Kimberly Van Der Beek told People in an interview published Tuesday.
The former film producer described the ceremony as “simple and beautiful and moving,” explaining that their pal Poranguí, a multi-instrumentalist, played the “most beautiful music.”
Poranguí closed out the ceremony with “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.”
According to the outlet, a few of the couple’s close friends attended the renewal while others joined in remotely over Zoom.
The “Dawson’s Creek” alum and Kimberly tied the knot on Aug. 1, 2010. They welcomed six children together.
James, who was diagnosed with colorectal cancer in August 2023, died on Feb. 11 at the age of 48.
“He met his final days with courage, faith and grace,” Kimberly, 44, announced via Instagram. “There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity and the sacredness of time. Those days will come.”
The actor’s family set up a GoFundMe after his medical treatments “left [his] family out of funds.”
More than $2.6 million has been raised (at the time of publication Tuesday).
James — who had a net worth of $3 million — resorted to selling autographed merchandise from his past projects to help with finances ahead of his death.
The “Rules of Attraction” star was mourned by several of his co-stars throughout the years, including Katie Holmes.
“I formed some words with a heavy heart,” the actress, who starred with James in “Dawson’s Creek” from 1998 to 2003, wrote on Instagram. “I am so grateful to have shared in a piece of James’ journey. He is beloved.”
James was reportedly working on a memoir before he died, though it’s unclear how far he got with the project, or if it’ll be released.
The “Varsity Blues” star’s final projects included the forthcoming “Legally Blonde” prequel series “Elle” and the 2025 show “Overcompensating.”
