Disney Channel alum Christy Carlson Romano reveals positive cancer screening results one year after shooting accident
Christy Carlson Romano tearfully admitted that a recent cancer screening test she took came back positive.
Taking to her Instagram Wednesday, the Disney Channel alum told fans that she and her husband, Brendan Rooney, both went in for testing “the other day” to check on their health.
“My husband’s [results] came back completely negative. Mine did not come back negative,” Romano, 41, said while getting emotional.
“The next steps are to get a PET scan [but] I’m fighting with companies to get that covered.”
Romano explained that her family has a history of the disease, with both of her parents being diagnosed with cancer over the years.
While her mother ultimately “beat it,” Romano said her father “eventually didn’t.” Her maternal grandmother also died of lung cancer.
After revealing the results, the “Even Stevens” star went on to share a story about fellow actor James Van Der Beek, who died last week at the age of 48 after a battle with colorectal cancer.
The podcaster explained that she knew the “Dawson’s Creek” actor and his wife, Kimberly, as they also lived in Texas with their six kids.
“I live in Austin, and I was able to meet James Van Der Beek a bunch. His family’s amazing. He’s a pillar of our community in Texas,” Romano shared. “They always were raising money for the most amazing charities, and he’s not with us anymore. Cancer is everywhere. Which is why I got this test.”
The mom of two noted that she was in “disbelief” about her results and hoped to “not think about it much.”
Instead, she told fans that she is putting her energy into her upcoming memoir and filming for a movie.
“[This is a] very vulnerable time for me,” Romano divulged. “About 367 days since I got shot in the face.”
The “Cadet Kelly” alum was referring to an incident that happened last February, when she was “shot in the face” while shooting clay pigeons for her husband’s birthday.
At the time, she said she was “grateful to be alive” after the mishap.
Despite all her recent trials and tribulations, Romano — who shares daughters Isabella, 9, and Sophia, 7, with Rooney — is keeping a positive outlook on life.
“It’s time to have a strong sense of faith and know that it’s in God’s hands, most of it. I’m sure people think I’m overreacting, but I’m not, because cancer is pretty serious, and I have two little girls,” Romano expressed in her IG video Tuesday.
“When you’re somebody like me, you kinda have to take life a day at a time, really be grateful for all the amazing stuff around you. That’s why I always try to make jokes, and I try to be funny. Not just because I’m trying to be liked, or stay relevant.”
Romano further admitted in the caption for the post that she was “nervous and a bit scared” to even share the news so publicly out of fear of coming off as “cringe.”
“I’m going in for a PET scan later this week and hopefully it’s something easy to treat🤞,” she added. “Let’s keep the good vibes going and I will keep you all posted as I get more information.”
The actress’ husband later took to the comments section to show his support.
“You got this my beautiful wife,” Rooney, 43, wrote. “We will figure this out and destroy any problem that comes your way. I love you beyond words.”
Romano has always been open with her followers on social media, especially after what happened last winter when she was accidentally “shot in the eye.”
Luckily, the “Kim Possible” alum’s vision wasn’t impaired, but it was “too risky” for her to undergo surgery to remove the fragment, she explained via Instagram at the time.
“With everything that happened, all I can think about is how grateful I am to be alive,” she said.
“I love my daughters, husband, family, and friends so much. I saw my life flash before my eyes and I’m telling you, hug the people around you every chance you can. Life can change in an instant. 🙏.”
