Karla Sofía Gascón trolls Timothée Chalamet over ballet comment
Karla Sofía Gascón trolled Timothée Chalamet over his anti-ballet and opera comments.
On Monday, the Spanish actress reshared a meme on her Instagram Stories, showing Chalamet calling her to ask if the Oscars would force him to skip the red carpet on Sunday.
The meme was referring to her racist and anti-Muslim tweets resurfacing shortly after she made history during the 2025 Oscars as the first transgender woman nominated for best actress for “Emilia Pérez.”
“Are you a trans woman? Then don’t worry about it, Tim,” Gascón responded in the meme.
“Besides, I love ballet slippers and I’ve seen ‘The Phantom of the Opera ten times,’” she continued. “Not sure if that counts for anything. Best of luck with the awards. Even though no one has seen or heard me say anything, while they have both seen and heard you, people still seem to prefer believing whatever the bad guys claim I said.”
Chalamet recently sparked controversy when he said he doesn’t “want to be working in ballet or opera where it’s like, ‘Hey! Keep this thing alive, even though no one cares about this anymore,’” during a town hall event produced by Variety and CNN last month.
He quickly added, “All respect to the ballet and opera people out there … I just lost 14 cents in viewership.”
His remarks quickly went viral, with the 30-year-old getting slammed by ballet and opera professionals.
Misty Copeland clapped back at the “Dune” star, saying that he “shouldn’t be comparing” his craft to other art forms.
“He wouldn’t be an actor and have the opportunities he has as a movie star if it weren’t for opera and ballet and their relevance in that medium,” the ballet prodigy explained on Sunday. “So all of these mediums have a space.”
“Jeopardy” and the “View” also took aim at Chalamet’s comments.
Gascón chiming in comes a year after she skipped most of the 2025 award season over a series of resurfaced racist tweets.
In the tweets, which were posted between May 2016 and April 2023, the actress described Muslims as “a DEEP DISGUSTING HUMANITY” and called George Floyd a “drug addict swindler,” amongst other horrific posts.
After they came to light, the actress apologized via Netflix, saying, “As someone in a marginalized community, I know this suffering all too well and I am deeply sorry to those I have caused pain.
“All my life I have fought for a better world. I believe light will always triumph over darkness.”
She subsequently skipped the 2025 SAG Awards, the Critics’ Choice Awards, the PGA Awards, the Goya Awards and the BAFTAs, where she was nominated for leading actress.
Gascón ultimately showed up for the 2025 Oscars, where “Emilia Pérez” received 13 nominations, but skipped the red carpet.
Reps for Gascón and the Academy were not immediately available to Page Six for comment.
