Savannah Guthrie honored missing mom Nancy on ‘Today’ show after Mother’s Day
This Sunday marked the first Mother’s Day Savannah Guthrie has spent without her mom, Nancy Guthrie, who has been missing since February 1.
And, to honor the 84-year-old, Savannah wore a special color for Monday morning’s “Today Show.”
To kick off the week, Savannah appeared in studio 1A wearing a bright yellow longsleeved shirt, paired with a yellow, green, black and white plaid midi skirt. She layered necklaces, bracelets and rings with the look.
There was no explicit mention of the outfit choice, but yellow has been the color that has represented the Guthrie family search over the past three and a half months.
Announcing that she would also begin hosting a new Wordle game show, executive produced by Jimmy Fallon, Savannah shared, “When everything happened with me and my family, NBC just stopped everything and said, ‘We’ll wait for you.’”
Immediately after Nancy’s disappearance, Arizona residents began to leave yellow flowers and ribbons around her neighborhood.
Back in February, an Arizona neighbor explained to People, “The yellow ribbon is a sentiment of hope and support after someone goes missing.”
According to the National Museum of American Diplomacy, the symbol dates back to 1979.
As 52 US diplomats were held as hostages in Iran, one of the diplomat’s wives urged the public to display yellow ribbons as a show of support, inspired the song “Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree.”
What’s more, on February 18, Hoda Kotb adopted the sentiment for their NBC family while filling in for Savannah during her extended absence.
This is not the first time that Savannah has used yellow in her wardrobe to silently send a message of love to her missing mom.
For her first day back in the anchor’s chair on April 6, she chose a bright yellow lace Elie Tahari dress, paired with a yellow heart pendant on a gold paperclip chain necklace.
On Sunday, she posted a touching Mother’s Day tribute on Instagram, writing, “We miss you with every breath. We will never stop looking for you. We will never be at peace until we find you.”
