Nick Reiner snubbed by family members for court hearing one day after accused murderer’s birthday

Nick Reiner was snubbed by his family at his latest court hearing Tuesday, just one day after the accused murderer spent his 33rd birthday behind bars.

No members of the Reiner family were present in the Los Angeles courtroom as Nick appeared before Judge Sam Ohta for a pretrial hearing, Page Six observed.

Notably absent was Nick’s aunt, Annie Reiner, who showed support for her nephew during his previous legal proceeding in February, but did not attend Tuesday’s hearing.

His siblings, Jake and Romy, were also nowhere to be seen.

The brother and sister have not attended Nick’s recent court hearings, and a family spokesperson previously said the pair had “the utmost trust in the legal process.”

Nick, who is accused of murdering his parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, appeared “numb” and “eerily calm” in court Tuesday while sitting partially handcuffed to a chair beside his public defender, Kimberly Greene.

The “Being Charlie” co-writer wore a brown jail uniform and sported facial stubble with his previously short hair grown out and combed to the side.

Nick kept his attention on Ohta and replied “yes” when the judge asked whether he understood that he was waiving his right to a speedy trial. At one point, he also thanked the judge.

The hearing came one day after Nick marked his first birthday behind bars at Los Angeles’ Twin Towers Correctional Facility.

As Page Six previously reported, Nick received “no special treatment” from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department when he turned 33 on Monday.

The milestone was a far cry from his 22nd birthday in 2015, when he celebrated alongside his father at the Toronto International Film Festival, where their semi-autobiographical film “Being Charlie” premiered.

While Nick’s family stayed away from court Tuesday, his siblings have been actively involved behind the scenes in matters surrounding their parents’ murder case.

Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced shortly before Nick’s hearing that prosecutors will not seek the death penalty if he is convicted of killing Rob and Michele.

Hochman said his office reached the decision after reviewing aggravating and mitigating factors and consulting with prosecutors, law enforcement and the victims’ family.

However, the DA did not disclose what punishment Jake and Romy wanted prosecutors to pursue.

With capital punishment off the table, Nick faces a maximum sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole if convicted.

Jake and Romy have also asked that the grandy jury transcripts in the case remain sealed.

“After speaking to the victims’ next of kin — that is Jake and Romy Reiner — they have expressed a strong desire for these transcripts to remain sealed,” Hochman shared.

“And they basically have said that the disclosure to the public and the media of the details and evidence of the killing of their parents will cause them additional trauma and harm. And they have [respectfully] asked for the court to keep the transcripts sealed.”

Hochman has deferred to the court to make that decision. Ohta is expected to hear arguments on the issue next month.

Nick was indicted by a grand jury on two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the December 2025 stabbing deaths of his parents inside their Brentwood home.

The indictment also includes special circumstance allegations of multiple murders and “lying in wait,” along with an allegation that he personally used a deadly weapon, a knife.

Rob, 78, and Michele, 70, died within “minutes” of suffering multiple sharp-force injuries, according to their death certificates.

Nick was arrested shortly after his parents were found dead, and has remained in jail without bail.

Nick — who was diagnosed with schizophrenia before the killings and has a long history of drug addiction — has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Hochman said Tuesday that he does not expect Nick’s trial to begin before 2027, explaining that the defense is still reviewing discovery and additional material is expected to be turned over in the coming weeks.
