Jon Voight praises estranged daughter Angelina Jolie, granddaughter Vivienne: ‘Very proud’
Jon Voight praised his estranged daughter, Angelina Jolie, and his 15-year-old granddaughter, Vivienne, after they won a Tony award for best musical last weekend.
“It’s amazing,” he told TMZ, referring to the mother-daughter duo’s win for the musical they co-produced, “The Outsiders.”
“[I’m] very proud of Vivienne and very proud of Angie because she really tries to encourage each of the kids to be what they want to be.”
The “Anaconda” actor, 85, said Vivienne, who is credited as an assistant and co-producer on the Broadway version of “The Outsiders,” introduced the “Maleficient” actress, 49, to the musical after seeing it multiple times in San Diego.
“Vivienne read the book and then went down to see this pre-Broadway version close to San Diego,” he explained. “She went down four times and said, ‘Mom, you’ve got to see this.’ Angie was very interested. It showed something of Vivienne she’d never seen before.”
Voight said the director believed his granddaughter “had talent and an eye for something.”
On June 16, Vivienne and Jolie hit the red carpet at the 2024 Tony Awards, matching in coordinating looks.
The “Eternals” star stunned in a draped seafoam green velvet Atelier Versace gown with a matching shrug, while the teen opted for a white collared shirt, a teal-colored vest, trousers and a bow tie.
Vivienne is one of the six kids Jolie shares with ex-husband Brad Pitt.
The pair, who were declared legally single in 2019, are also parents to Maddox, 22, Zahara, 19, Shiloh, 18, Pax, 20, and Vivienne’s twin, Knox.
Meanwhile, the “Laura Croft” actress and Voight have had their own issues over the years.
Jolie was reportedly upset that her father cheated on her mother, Marcheline Bertrand, during their marriage. The couple divorced in 1980 when Jolie was 5 years old.
When the “Salt” actress tied the knot with Pitt, 60, in 2014, Voight shared that he had no idea about the nuptials.
And last November, the “Midnight Cowboy” actor slammed his daughter for sharing posts in defense of Palestinians instead of Israelis.
“I am very disappointed that my daughter, like so many, has no understanding of God’s honor, God’s truths,” he said in an Instagram video at the time.
“This is about destroying the history of God’s land, the Holy Land, the Land of the Jews. This is justice for God’s children of the Holy Land.”
He then called anyone who supported Palestinians “fools” and asked them to question God about “truth.”
