Good Morning Britain’s Richard Madeley has shockingly admitted to totalling a car while on a French getaway after he forgot about a crucial local driving law.

The telly veteran, who is married to Judy Finnigan and has been her partner for nearly four decades, was recounting the tale of a month-long French escapade when the mishap occurred.

Madeley, who’s no stranger to the GMB hot seat, revealed that a memory lapse about driving on the right side of the road in France led to the accident.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Richard recounted: “I spent a month in France and had a French car while I was out there and I ended up driving on the left side of the road. I totally wrote off the car. Luckily, neither of us were hurt.”

But it seems this isn’t Richard’s first dance with automotive misfortune. Last year, he disclosed to fellow Good Morning Britain presenter Andi Peters that he was making do with Judy’s wheels, reports the Express.

During a segment where Andi was tempting viewers with a £90,000 cash prize and a Mercedes, he quizzed Richard about an unfamiliar vehicle occupying his usual prime parking spot.

Andi probed: “I had to park a long way away from the door we use to get in, Richard, because you have got a prime time car parking space but it’s not your car there. Whose car does that belong to?”

Richard then clarified that he was using Judy’s car temporarily after his own car met with an unfortunate fate, explaining: “Yes, I crashed mine last week or somebody crashed it.”

Andi revealed that the information was a “revelation” to him, and humorously said he’d love to see Richard in the Volkswagen Beetle, calling the notion “amazing”.

Richard, having pledged to forward Andi a photo, was previously seen driving the cream-coloured Beetle with Judy by his side.
