Olivia Munn admits she “barely knew” her now-husband, John Mulaney, when she got pregnant with their first child in 2021.

“It wasn’t anything close to ‘dating,’” the actress, 44, told GQ of their relationship status when she found out she was expecting their son, Malcolm. “I barely knew him.”

The couple talked about how their physical relationship blossomed into a marriage with two kids while being interviewed by GQ, as the comedian covers the outlet’s 2024 Men of the Year issue.

After briefly meeting in 2013 at Seth Meyer and Alexi Ashe’s wedding, the two reconnected in 2021.

At the time, the “Saturday Night Live” alum, 42, was looking for a new apartment in New York City after splitting from ex-wife Anna Marie Tendler. Munn referred Mulaney to a friend and they began talking again, at some point developing a more intimate relationship.

Munn told GQ that Mulaney was excited when she told him she was pregnant, however, adding, “It wasn’t necessarily, ‘We’re going to be married and live together’ or any of that, but it was, ‘I will be involved in some way.’”

Munn initially assumed they would simply co-parent their child while she lived in Los Angeles and he remained in New York. However, the two would talk every once in a while or he would come visit her throughout her pregnancy.

At the time, Mulaney was fresh off a rehab stay after relapsing during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic. Before that, he had been sober for 15 years after battling addiction and alcoholism.

The two seemingly grew closer throughout Munn’s pregnancy as the exciting arrival of the little one was “the only thing that made him seem light and happy.”

“I remember he was really excited to tell his parents. I was watching someone newly sober, at the edge of a cliff, and I didn’t know him well enough to help him,” she told the outlet.

“In my head, I’m thinking, ‘I don’t know really what’s happening with this guy. It feels pretty shaky,’” Munn continued, noting that he was a completely different person while performing. “But then I would see him at the Troubadour and be like, ‘Man, he’s on fire. He’s just that phenomenal.’”

By the time Munn was six months pregnant, she decided to get involved in Mulaney’s recovery and staged a mini-intervention. They agreed at the time that she would give him random drug tests, something she still does to this day.

Two months later, they decided to raise their son as a couple.

In September 2021, Mulaney announced he and Munn were expecting their first child after their relationship was exposed that spring.

“In the spring, I went to Los Angeles and met and started to date a wonderful woman named Olivia,” he told Meyers during an episode of “Late Night with Seth Meyers.”

“And we’re having a baby together. I was nervous when I was about to say the news. … I’m gonna be a dad!”

They welcomed their son, Malcolm, in November 2021. However, it wasn’t until February 2022 that Mulaney finalized his divorce from Tendler, whom he married eight years prior.

Munn and Mulaney then tied the knot in July 2024 following her breast cancer battle.

Two months after their wedding, Mulaney and Munn welcomed their second child — a daughter named Méi — via surrogate.
