Adam Driver and Cate Blanchett are among an ensemble of actors playing out awkward family dynamics in their new movie.

On Thursday, Oct. 9, Mubi released the trailer for its upcoming dramedy Father Mother Sister Brother, an anthology-style movie that features Driver, 41, and Mayim Bialik portray siblings who visit their somewhat estranged father (played by Tom Waits). The movie’s other two stories feature Blanchett, 56, and Vicky Krieps as sisters who step out to visit their mother (Charlotte Rampling) and a pair of twins (Indya Moore and Luka Sabbat) picking up the pieces following their parents’ sudden deaths.

An official synopsis for the movie describes Father Mother Sister Brother as an “intimate exploration of the universal intricacies of family dynamics” from writer-director Jim Jarmusch.

“Told in the form of a triptych divided into chapters set in New Jersey, Dublin and Paris, each story concerns the relationships between adult children, their somewhat distant parent (or parents), and each other,” the synopsis reads.

“Blending remarkable performances from its ensemble cast with Jarmusch’s wry and idiosyncratic observations of everyday life, the iconic indie director’s latest serves as a timely reminder that you can choose your friends and your lovers, but you can’t choose your family.”

Father Mother Sister Brother won the Golden Lion prize at the Venice Film Festival this September as the festival’s top movie and premiered at the New York Film Festival on Oct. 3; it will also screen at the BFI London Film Festival on Oct. 18 and Oct. 19.

The movie makes for Driver’s first acting role since he starred in Francis Ford Coppola’s 2024 fantasy epic Megalopolis. Blanchett, meanwhile, starred in Steven Soderbergh’s spy thriller Black Bag earlier this year. For director Jarmusch, 72, the new movie is his first feature film since 2019’s The Dead Don’t Die.

Following its run on the fall film festival circuit, Father Mother Sister Brother hits theaters on Dec. 24.
