  • The music producer’s secret to making great music is “making stuff that makes me feel good”

Benny Blanco, who’s behind some of pop music’s greatest hits in the past two decades, is sharing his secret to success.

In interview with Harper’s BAZAAR for its Icons issue released Tuesday, Aug. 19, the music producer opened up about his creative process.

“I feel like my mind and a 15-year-old girl’s mind are very similar in what we like, musically,” Blanco, 37, said.

“I’ve just always been drawn to having fun and making stuff that makes me feel good. If it winds up being something that other people like, then that’s cool to me,” he continued. “If it doesn’t, then that’s also cool to me. I think being iconic is not giving a f—.”

Blanco, who co-produced hit songs like Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream,” Maroon 5 and Christina Aguilera’s “Moves Like Jagger” and Kesha’s “TiK ToK,” said he had “no idea my career was gonna be what it was gonna be.”

“When we were making ‘Teenage Dream,’ we didn’t know it was gonna be this iconic song people are gonna talk about forever,” he said. “We were just making a song and having fun and getting drunk. It’s not rocket science. Sometimes you happen to be in the right spot at the right time.”

In July, Blanco appeared on Jake Shane’s Therapuss and admitted to forgetting what he’s worked on as he opened up about his music catalogue.

“The first, like, big pop thing that I ever worked on was Britney Spears,” Blanco said. “Sometimes I am in a restaurant and I’m like, ‘Oh my God, this song’s so good.’ And I Shazam it, and then it’s my own song.”

When Shane asked how he doesn’t realize it’s his, Blanco admitted, “I’m old and can’t remember anything.”

He also noted that he’s been “making songs for 16 years” and compared it to being able to recall everyone Shane has interviewed on his podcast if he had been doing it for that long.

Blanco’s latest release was a collaborative album with fiancée Selena Gomez called I Said I Love You First in March.

“This album came together organically as a direct result of the comfort that they both felt when working together creatively, allowing them to produce art that authentically reflects their experiences,” a press release said at the time.
