Benny Blanco says Selena Gomez ‘changed her mind’ about her engagement ring — ‘I tried not to f—k up’
Selena Gomez had second thoughts about her engagement ring.
In a joint interview with Interview Magazine published today, the “Only Murders in the Building” actress, 32, and her fiancé, record producer Benny Blanco, 36, shared memories from when they were selecting the sparkler.
Though Gomez says she dreamed of a marquise-style diamond since her 2015 “Good For You” song, which includes the lyrics “I’m on my marquise diamonds / I’m a marquise diamond” — she did have some doubts about the ring design along the way.
“I just tried not to f—k up,” Blanco chimed in during their chat with editor in chief Mel Ottenberg after Gomez stated, “that’s the diamond I’ve always dreamed of.”
He added, “She showed me designs and I would always throw little hints. I’d be like, “Yeah, but if I ever made one, would you want it like this?”
Blanco revealed that his soon-to-be-wife changed her mind halfway through the process.
“It used to have huge baguettes on the side and then she was like, ‘I don’t want something that big,’” the songwriter recalled.
Gomez responded, “I just think it’s too much,” but her fiancé ensured her “the end result is perfect.”
Because of the situation, Blanco explained, “Yeah, so now I have extra baguettes and we’re going to make earrings for her. She basically has three wedding rings.”
After a year of dating, Blanco popped the question on a set that was designed to look like a Central Park picnic — complete with Taco Bell.
Gomez later shared the exciting news on Instagram, captioning a photo of her rock, “forever begins now..”
Blanco collaborated with jewelry duo Katherine Theofilos Claster and Stephanie Theofilos from Abril Barret to design the sparkler.
Together, they created a marquise-shaped diamond ring with a cathedral setting and a brilliant-cut eternity band.
“We started the project earlier this year,” Claster told Page Six Style exclusively. “Benny, a wonderful creative himself, had specific inspiration, including the center cut, the marquise.”
“We worked closely with multiple approaches before our final ring,” the expert added.
“Benny had a very sharp idea of what he ultimately envisioned. We combined it with our Abril Barret sentiment to capture the essence of an heirloom piece with a modern hand.”
The couple also collaborated on a surprise joint album, called “I Said I Love You First,” and dropped the first single, “Scared of Loving You” on Friday.
