Big Sean gets spiritual with his six favorite book recommendations
From Jay Shetty to Paulo Coelho, rapper Big Sean’s book recommendations are aimed at self-reflection and growth.
“I love a good story, whether it’s diving deep into real-life experiences in nonfiction or getting lost in the imagination of fiction,” Sean, 36, tells Page Six.
The “Go Higher” author, whose book hit stands earlier this month, adds, “As long as it’s captivating and keeps me locked, I’m all in.”
See below for Sean’s list of must-reads.
“When I found this book at 19, I felt like it was meant for me. I felt electric reading it. I’ve read it about four times since. One of the parts of ‘The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success’ that I think about all the time is the Law of Least Effort. That really stuck with me, and it’s about how the flow of nature, the way water flows, the way grass grows, the way the sun shines should be present in how you are when you’re in your purpose, when you’re in your flow. It’s like how you might feel when you see an eagle in the sky, gliding on the wind.”
“Behavioral scientist Dr. Grace Lordan looks at six areas — time, goal planning, self-narratives, other people, environment, and resilience concepts — to help come up with career strategies. I love the motivation this book gives you. It really breaks it down to the fundamentals of manifesting more in your life.”
“I’ve been on my friend Jay Shetty’s podcast ‘On Purpose’ a couple of times, and they’ve been a couple of the best conversations of my life. Jay uses his own experiences as a monk on an ashram to talk about getting rid of negative thoughts and bad habits, and how to become calm and deliberate. The book is incredibly soothing.”
“‘Go Higher’ is an invitation to begin a transformative journey of self-discovery. It encourages you to prioritize your well-being, nurture your passions, and pursue a life filled with purpose and fulfillment. By sharing my own experiences and vulnerabilities, I hope to inspire others to embrace their personal growth and reach their fullest potential.”
“The Alchemist” by Paulo Coelho
“In ‘The Alchemist,’ Santiago, an Andalusian shepherd boy, travels in search of treasure. In the process, he learns about listening to our hearts, recognizing opportunity, and following dreams. At one of my first shows in California, at UCLA, the promoter who booked me for the show said, ‘Have you ever read the book “The Alchemist”? It’s changed my life, and it even helped me manifest booking you. A goal of mine was to book you for this show. And I’m sitting here talking to you right now. Man, you have to read this book.’
“He gave me his copy, and I read it. And it was life changing. I saw the world differently after I read it. It made everything I dreamed of feel more possible. And the second time I read it, I got even more out of it than I did the first time.”
“This book contains four guided daily meditations designed to get you into what the authors call the Vortex of Creation in four areas: General Well-Being, Financial Well-Being, Physical Well-Being, and Relationships. The Hicks family believes that, to live better, we need to come into alignment with “the Energy of our Source.” I totally believe in the idea that when we meditate, we are able to tap into a higher state of being and that everything gets better for us when we do.”
