A proposed documentary series following Bill Belichick’s first season as the University of North Carolina’s football coach is still being shopped around, PEOPLE confirms.
The news comes just days after it was reported that the proposed docuseries, allegedly set to air later this fall on Hulu, had been nixed. However, a source close to the project tells PEOPLE the docuseries has not been scrapped, but rather Hulu is no longer involved.
“Hulu wanted Keeping Up with the Belichicks, but that was never for sale,” the source tells PEOPLE. “Their vision ultimately wasn’t in alignment with the university’s.”
The source adds: “The contracts between UNC and Everwonder are still in place and are valid. There will be a documentary, Hulu is just no longer involved in production or distribution.”
Hulu never officially confirmed the series, which Belichick, 73, first announced in a speech to his players in August before the season began.
A representative for EverWonder Studio, the company that was set to produce the project, did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment this week about the series’ status.
Belichick provided insight into what he believed the docuseries would be about during a team meeting in late August, just days before the former NFL coach and his new college team kicked off their season against TCU on Sept. 1.
“This is about the UNC football program,” Belichick told his players at the time. “There’s obviously a lot of interest in it and it’ll stream on Hulu later this fall.”
Belichick said that the proposed docuseries would “feature the players working hard” and would be “about the players improving and getting better through their hard work.”
The six-time Super Bowl-winning head coach said the proposed docuseries would also be about “a program starting from where it started from several months ago to wherever it’s gonna go during the course of the season, which, of course, will be determined on the field.”
“It’ll show our commitment to winning, it’ll show our commitment to the team, and that’s our priority,” Belichick said.

However, in the weeks to follow, UNC’s first season under Belichick got off to an underwhelming 2-3 start, which included blowout losses to TCU, UFC and Clemson.
Earlier this week, some outlets reported that Belichick and UNC were exploring the possibility of a buyout, while both the coach and the football program shared joint statements online pledging they’re “fully committed” to each other.
