Brooke Shields reacts to John Mulaney spoofing her 1980 Calvin Klein ad for ‘SNL’
Nothing comes between John Mulaney and his jokes.
The comedian, 42, hosted “Saturday Night Live” on Nov. 2, with one of his promotional images for the show re-creating Brooke Shield’s controversial Calvin Klein ad from 1980.
In the pic, Mulaney wears a pair of dark-washed jeans and a red button-up shirt, kicking one of his heeled boot-clad feet in the air, just like the famed supermodel.
Shields, 59, gave the images her stamp of approval on social media.
“I see no difference… I guess they can be your Calvins too, @johnmulaney 👖🤣 @nbcsnl @calvinklein,” “The Blue Lagoon” alum wrote in an Instagram post, sharing the two pics side by side.
Some fans, however, hilariously critiqued Mulaney’s modeling skills in the comment section.
“John didn’t point his toe – minus three points on style,” one follower wrote, while another added, “This is amazing but u need to school him on the toe point 🩰😘🔥”
Others are feeling nostalgic about the original campaign imagery. “I have this picture of you on my HS yearbook!”
In the 1980 ad, Shields — who was only 15 at the time — paired her form-fitting jeans with a maroon blouse that was only buttoned at the top, revealing her midriff.
With teenage Shields uttering the tagline, “What comes between me and my Calvins? Nothing,” in the campaign, it immediately sparked plenty of controversy.
In fact, some television stations, including CBS and ABC, banned the imagery as they felt it was too provocative.
In a 2021 interview with Vogue, the legendary model reflected on the iconic ad. “I didn’t think it was about underwear or sexual in nature. I was naive,” she told the outlet.
“The controversy backfired. The campaign was extremely successful, and then the underwear overtook the jeans,” she said in the interview.
Just a few months ago, Shields announced she is giving up the iconic pants for an auction in partnership with Studio Auctions, where fans can bid on the piece of fashion history starting later this month.
Valued at around $50,000 in 2024, the bottoms happened to be sitting around in Shields’ closet.
“But now I’m going through all my closets and my things and am ready to give some of my special pieces away, like my Calvin Klein jeans,” she said to People.
“Can you imagine my waist was ever that small? It’s terrifying! But I hope that somebody enjoys these just as much as I have and finds them as meaningful as I do. I can’t wait for someone to show these off!”
