Cause of Death Revealed for Record-Breaking Climber Jake Whisenant After Sudden Death During Climb

A cause of death has been revealed for Jake Whisenant, the record-breaking climber who died on August 3 after falling during a climb.

Whisenant, who was 30, died of blunt force trauma and his death was ruled an accident, the Tulare County Sheriff’s Office Coroner told TMZ. Toxicology results are still pending.

TMZ reported that witnesses claimed to have seen him fall at Sequoia-Kings Canyon Wilderness in California. Additional circumstances around his death were not released, but SF Gate reports authorities were called to the scene that day for a “climbing-related incident,” prompting a search and rescue operation.

Following his death, longtime friend Bailee Moore remembered Whisenant as “completely devoted” and “passionate” about climbing.

“It is with an impossibly heavy heart that I share the passing of my lifelong friend and confidant — Jacob Daniel Whisenant,” Moore wrote via Instagram on Thursday, August 6. “Our family is absolutely devastated by this news but find solace in the fact that Jake died doing what he loves in the beautiful Sierra Nevada.”

She added, “I will look for you in every life, my brother. Now go rest high up on that mountain.”

Whisenant was known for breaking the speed record in completing El Capitan’s daunting Lurking Fear route, doing so in under three hours alongside friend Brant Hysell in 2024.

“A truly magical day that I’ll never forget,” Whisenant wrote via Instagram at the time. “We both tapped into a flow state, fully committed to our plan, and most importantly had an absolute blast on our favorite rock. We had perfect weather for a shirtless ascent and the entire route to ourselves.”

The pair broke a record that had stood since 2003.

‘In a place where so many legendary figures have written history, [it’s] easy to talk yourself out of your potential, especially when you just climb for fun and don’t get paid to do it,” Whisenant continued. “After a four-hour lap the Friday prior we knew there was [a] slight chance we could refine some of our tactics, go for broke, and maybe have a shot. I’m grateful for a partner who is down to find the limit, and for Yosemite and all of the lessons it has taught me. No doubt I will continue to be humbled and taught lessons by this place.”

El Capitan is the same vertical rock formation that renowned climber Alex Honnold conquered in his Netflix film Free Solo, released in 2018. The film was critically acclaimed, and Honnold, 40, returned to Netflix in 2025 to free solo climb Taipei 101, one of the tallest buildings on Earth.
