Cheryl Burke apologizes for using gunshot sound hours after deadly Minnesota school shooting
Cheryl Burke has issued a mea culpa for sharing an insensitive social media post on the heels of the deadly school shooting in Minnesota.
“I want to take a moment to acknowledge something very important. Less than an hour ago, I posted a transition video that included the sound of a gun,” the “Dancing With the Stars” alum began in a lengthy post shared via Instagram Thursday but written on Wednesday.
“At the time, I was completely unaware of the horrific school shooting that took place today in Minneapolis at a Catholic school. Out of respect for the lives impacted, I have already taken that post down.”
Burke, 41, seemingly swiped the video so quickly from her account that there appears to be no traces of it left on the internet.
The pro dancer clarified that her taking down the post does not “erase the reality” that it could have “caused pain, discomfort, or even retraumatization for those affected” by the tragedy.
“For that, I am deeply sorry,” she continued. “I never want my content—no matter the intent— to feel careless or disconnected from the world we live in. I take full responsibility for what I put out into the world, and this is a reminder for me to always pause, reflect, and be more mindful of timing and impact.”
Burke went on to extend her prayers to the victims and families of those slain in the shooting.
On Wednesday, suspect Robin Westman killed at least two children and injured 17 others while wielding a rifle, shotgun and pistol at a Catholic school in Minneapolis. The shooter then died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the back of a church.
Burke noted in her message that she realizes “words cannot undo harm” but said she hopes her post “makes clear” that she is holding herself “accountable and moving forward with more awareness.”
She reiterated in her caption, “I’m deeply sorry for my earlier post. I was unaware of the tragic school shooting in Minneapolis today and have since removed it. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, and everyone affected.”
Fans in the comments section appeared to accept Burke’s apology, with one person writing,”You didn’t do anything wrong. You didn’t even know what was happening. You’re so kind!”
Another agreed, “You were unaware of the tragedy when you posted. It could have happened to any of us. Please do not feel guilty for the post.”
