Chris Martin Serenades Lionel Messi, Wife During Latest Coldplay Kiss Cam After Astronomer Controversy
Coldplay’s Chris Martin is continuing to celebrate love on the big screen after the recent Astronomer debacle.
During Coldplay’s Sunday, July 27, concert in Miami Gardens, Florida, Martin, 48, gave a shout-out to one famous spectator: soccer star Lionel Messi, 38, who was shown on the jumbotron with his wife, Antonela Roccuzzo.
In fact, the frontman performed a little ditty just for Messi, who plays for local Major League Soccer club Inter Miami.
As Coldplay’s kiss cam homed in on Messi and Roccuzzo, 37, the crowd inside the Hard Rock Stadium began chanting the soccer star’s name, per footage shared via social media.
Martin can then be heard singing to the pair, “You and your wife are looking so fine / Thanks for coming today to see our band play / The No. 1 sportsperson of all time.”
In the clip, Messi and Roccuzzo can be seen smiling as he rests his hand on her lower back. Acknowledging Martin’s compliment, the forward then waves out to Martin and the crowd as his wife claps.
Sunday’s wholesome kiss cam moment vastly differed from the now-viral moment caught on camera during Coldplay’s July 16 concert at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts.
During that show, Martin homed in on married former Astronomer CEO Andy Byron, who was seen with his arms wrapped around the tech company’s now-former chief people officer, Kristin Cabot. Realizing they were being shown on the jumbotron, the ex-colleagues appeared to duck down and avoid the camera’s lens as Martin awkwardly told the crowd, “Whoa, look at these two. All right, come on. You’re OK. Either they’re having an affair or they’re just very shy. I’m not quite sure what to do.”
“Holy s***,” Martin added. “I hope we didn’t do something bad.”
At Coldplay’s next concert in Madison, Wisconsin, on July 19, Martin playfully reminded fans that the show was being filmed as he introduced the kiss cam segment.
“We’d like to say hello to some of you in the crowd and put some of you on the big screen,” he said, per fan footage shared via social media. “How we’re going to do that is we’re going to use our cameras and put some of you on the big screen.”
Martin added with a laugh: “Please, if you haven’t done your makeup, do your makeup now!”
Following the July 16 incident, Byron resigned from his position as CEO of Astronomer. Cabot followed suit on Thursday, July 24.
“Kristin Cabot is no longer with Astronomer,” a spokesperson for Astronomer told Us Weekly. “She has resigned.”
On Friday, July 25, the company enlisted Martin’s ex-wife, Gwyneth Paltrow, as its temporary spokesperson for a tongue-in-cheek video about the company’s recent run of headline news.
