Christie Brinkley fights back tears over ‘arrogant’ ex’s affair
She was on the Brink.
Christie Brinkley almost broke down in tears while recounting how she found out about her ex-husband Peter Cook’s affair for the audiobook of her harrowing memoir, “Uptown Girl.”
“There were parts where I thought, ‘Please don’t cry,’” Brinkley told Social Life Magazine in an interview published last week.
The model, 71, explained that she tried to keep her voice “level” but that the publisher had her record her raw emotions.
“[The publisher] let me be. Let my voice crack. Let it show,” she said.
One of the most difficult stories for Brinkley to record for the project was when she recalled finding out about Cook’s infidelity right after delivering a commencement speech at a high school graduation ceremony in 2006.
The “Parks and Recreation” alum was sitting on stage when a man tapped her on the shoulder through the curtain and informed her that his teenage daughter and Brinkley’s “arrogant husband” were having an affair.
“I asked him to repeat it and then I looked back at Jack,” Brinkley told the magazine of her now-30-year-old son — who Peter adopted — with third husband Richard Taubman.
“Jack’s face was frozen in panic. He felt it instantly. He knew something was very wrong,” Brinkley continued.
The man would not reveal his name but told Brinkley that he was a Hamptons cop.
The shattering moment “nearly broke” her, according to the interview.
“When your whole world falls apart and you realize in a heartbeat you’ve suddenly become the cliché middle-aged woman whose husband is having an affair with a much (much) younger woman, what do you do?” the actress wrote in her book, which was released on April 29.
Brinkley and Peter — who also share daughter Sailor, 26 — announced that they were divorcing after 10 years of marriage that July. They subsequently went through a contentious custody battle before settling four years later for the sake of their children.
The Sports Illustrated Swimsuit cover girl has been divorced three other times. She was married to Jean-François Allaux from 1973 to 1981, Billy Joel from 1985 to 1994 and Taubman from 1994 to 1995.
Brinkley — who shares daughter Alexa Ray, 39, with Joel — also addressed the “Piano Man” singer’s drinking problem in her memoir. She specifically included a chapter about how Joel was once so drunk that he ate a large portion of spaghetti and then accused his family of eating it before kicking them out of the house.
“I hesitated to put that scene in the book,” she told the Los Angeles Times in an interview published in April. “But at the same time, it demonstrates what I was up against.”
She fought for their marriage for 11 years before ending things when Joel’s drinking crossed the line and he had multiple affairs.
Despite the downfall of their marriage, Brinkley revealed that she and Joel maintain a “great” friendship.
