Coco Jones’ Super Bowl 2026 performance look honored Whitney Houston’s 1991 tracksuit
Coco Jones brought icon status to her Super Bowl 2026 look.
Singing the black national anthem, “Lift Every Voice and Sing” before kickoff, Jones wore a white nylon jacket and skirt by Karl Kani with definite sporty appeal.
The two-piece look was actually a nod to the late Whitney Houston and her iconic rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” during the 1991 Super Bowl.
Jones’ high-waisted skirt boasted a drawstring and elastic waistband in the style of a pair of vintage track pants, which nipped in the volume of her bubble-hem mini skirt.
But that’s not all: a white train fell around her legs, billowing down her frame and cascading into a puddle beneath the platform on which she stood.
Jones’ cropped bomber featured a stylish corseted detail around her bodice and crystal-covered red, black and green stripes across her arms and chest.
The colors, representative of the Pan African flag, as well as the choice of song, which is an important hymn that dates back to the Civil Rights Movement, were both particularly poignant during Black History Month.
Houston, meanwhile, wore a Le Coq Sportif tracksuit 35 years ago and accessorized with Nike sneakers.
Jones even finished off her look with a wide white headband in her hair, just like Houston.
What’s more, the violinists who sat behind the singer during her performance were in a coordinated pants and zip-up version of the look that took viewers back in time.
The 28-year-old singer spoke to Entertainment Tonight before the big game, telling them that she was “so excited about [her] outfit” and that she “paid some homage to Whitney Houston.”
She looked to Kani to help her bring the idea to life, calling him “the godfather of hip hop.” In a desire to share the spotlight with the artist behind the look, she added, “I’m excited for him to have his moment with this.”
“Hopefully it’s going to be a historic moment as well,” she laughed.
For her sound check earlier in the day, Jones teased her game-tie look, choosing an all-white tracksuit that read “Coco Jones, Super Bowl 2026” on the back.
