Colorado’s Deion Sanders Dismisses Players From Team After Several Laughed Following Blowout Loss

Deion Sanders is making major changes to his team after the Colorado Buffaloes were embarrassed, 41-7, in a game at Northwestern on Saturday, September 19.

Sanders, 59, spoke to the media on Tuesday, September 22, ahead of Colorado’s next game this weekend at Baylor, where he was asked about several players who were caught on camera laughing after the blowout loss.

The head coach revealed there are “a few guys not on the team anymore.”

“I don’t understand how in the world you can find joy, or you can find a laughing matter when I’m right behind you walking [into the locker room],” Sanders said on Saturday. “I don’t understand that, and I addressed it, and I’m going to put my foot in it, not on it.”

Sanders added on Tuesday that his decision to dismiss players, whom he did not name, was about more than what was captured in the moments after the loss.

“It’s never one [thing],” he said. “I’m one of? the most loving and giving and forgiving men you could ever meet, but when you start [having] conduct detrimental to the team, you don’t care about the team, you care about you, I have a problem with that. A year ago, I didn’t put my foot down in it enough. It lingered a little bit. Then, it imploded. I’m not doing that anymore.”

The Buffaloes are now 2-1 on the season. As Sanders alluded to, they went 3-9 last year in a disappointing follow-up to a strong debut campaign for Coach Prime.

Colorado shared a statement with ESPN on Tuesday, clarifying that, “potential roster changes have not been finalized.”

“An updated roster will be released later in the week,” the school added.

Linebacker Tyler Martinez is apparently not one of the players dismissed. He called the news “unfortunate,” adding, “but when you look at the big picture, if it’s going to help us win, we’ve got to do it.”

Safety Ben Finneseth joined Sanders at the press conference where he apologized for comments that were captured and later shared on social media, where he said Northwestern’s brand-new home stadium “sounds like a f***ing library.”

“It was childish,” he said. “It was a stupid thing that I said. It won’t happen again. The way I handled it was horrible and I promise you guys that it will not happen again.”

With the Buffaloes getting ready to face Baylor, one of the Bears’ most famous football alumni, Robert Griffin III, voiced his support for Sanders, saying him kicking players off the team is “100 percent justified.”

“If it don’t mean something to you, then why are you there?” the former Heisman trophy winner asked via X. “Losing is not funny.”
