Most pranks don’t go as planned.
Josh Wilson didn’t know what he was getting into when his stepson, Cason, asked him if they could try a new viral challenge. The 9-year-old had seen multiple videos of parents telling their kids that if they slid their credit card down a wall, and they caught it with their forehead, then the kid could buy whatever they wanted with that card.
Usually, the kids ended up banging their heads on the surface, earning a headache rather than a shopping spree.
Regardless, after watching a few videos together, Wilson agreed to try it out. However, to his and the internet’s surprise, Cason caught it immediately. The video went viral on TikTok, amassing over 21 million views.
“I asked him if he practiced, and he said no, but by the way he executed that maneuver, I’m pretty sure he was probably practicing somehow,” Wilson tells PEOPLE.
However, true to his word, Wilson asked Cason what he wanted. His response? To meet Texas Rangers outfielder Adolis García.
“Our kids are very fortunate. They’ve got everything that they need,” Wilson explains.
“He said, ‘Do you think I could somehow meet Adolis García?’ It’s his favorite player for the Texas Rangers baseball team,” the dad adds. “I said ‘Dude, I doubt it. I don’t understand how that could be possible.’ ”
But Wilson was determined to try, so he created a second video responding to one of the commenters on the original TikTok. Sure enough, that video went viral as well.
“Within four or five hours, we had a message from the Texas Rangers and several, several of the wives on the team,” Wilson says.
“The wives said, “Hey, I just showed my husband. He showed it to this player, and he showed it to this player, and he showed it to Adolis García and I know his wife. I’m gonna reach out to her.’ Then the Texas Rangers emailed me, and they invited us to a game.”
The invitation included passes to be on the field for batting practice and a chance for Cason to meet his favorite player. Some of the wives of the Rangers’ players even offered to bring them autographed baseballs and other merchandise.
Still, before going to the game, Wilson told Cason “not to get his hopes up.” But, of course, this story has a happy ending, and they all got to meet García.
“When we arrived at the stadium, we were greeted by the Rangers’ social media staff. They gifted Cason a replica World Series ring from 2023, hats, shirts, and even an Adolis García jersey,” Wilson shares. “From there, we were escorted down a long hallway, took the elevator to the lower level, and were welcomed onto the field for batting practice.”
Wilson says that “all of the players, especially Adolis García, were so polite” and “equally excited” to meet the family.
The whole experience was surreal, and Wilson couldn’t be more grateful to the Rangers organization for making his stepson’s dream come true.
“It’s been really cool to see strangers, specifically the Rangers baseball wives, step up,” he says. “Any time you help somebody you know will never pay you back, and you go above and beyond to try to help that person, it’s incredible. Those types of people are some of the best people in the world, and my kid will be forever grateful.”
Wilson is positive that his sons “will be Rangers fans for the rest of their lives.”
“This was a weekend we could have only dreamed of,” he adds.
