Demi Moore’s Oscars dress: The worrying truth revealed

All red-carpet gowns are meant to be attention getters. But with feathers reaching from her bodice nearly to her chin, Demi Moore’s black and green Gucci dress at Sunday’s Oscars may have been intended, fashion insiders say, as a different kind of distraction.

The high-drama neckline didn’t just look incredible — it also covered up Moore’s clavicle as well as part of her biceps and shoulder bones, which had shocked fans during her appearance at the March 1 Actor Awards.

“It seems like Demi is trying to avoid more scrutiny,” one New York City-based celebrity stylist told Page Six of Moore’s iridescent, mermaid-silhouette gown — speculating that the coverage may be “intentional.”

“The extravagant feathers put most of the focus on her face and piercing eyes while covering the majority of her upper body, hiding her clavicle,” the NYC stylist added.

It was a striking difference from when “The Substance” star took the red carpet at the Actor Awards looking ultra lean in a sculptural Schiaparelli gown that put her sharp shoulders and arms on prominent display — and prompted much concern from fans online.

Stylist Amanda Saunders, who has worked with Gwyneth Paltrow and Rosie Perez, told Page Six: “The Gucci [gown] hid more of her body.”

Noting that the Oscars dress was a “very wow fashion moment,” Saunders added: “I think it was a great use of color and texture and dimension … it still showed her figure, showing off how tiny she is.

“We are visually distracted by the texture and the dimension, the color, the height [of the feathers] — there’s so much going on, the eye doesn’t focus in one area.”

Saunders also pointed out how wearing her hair down softened Moore’s look versus “that tightness and that harshness” of her pulled-back locks at the Actor Awards.

Moore has been part of a parade of extra-lean celebrities on this award season’s red carpets.

Celebrity nutritionist Jess Baker previously told Page Six she’s recently noticed “visible signs of muscle wasting in several celebrities where it wasn’t present before — hollowed temples, full clavicles showing, shoulder blades jutting out.

“In a clinical setting, these changes from baseline are cause for alarm. They can indicate malnutrition, meaning the body isn’t getting enough of what it needs to function,” Baker said.

One A-list stylist previously told Page Six that those who dress the stars are in an awkward position right now as even pin-thin actresses are “microdosing” weight-loss drugs like Ozempic. Stylists want their clients to look their best — but they also want them to be healthy. And they fear some celebs are blind to how painfully thin they are. (Moore is not known to be on Ozempic).

“You can’t tell these actresses they’re too skinny,” one A-list stylist said. “They’ll just say, but [another actress] is smaller than I am!”

Among those who have appeared thinner than usual this season is Emma Stone, who set tongues wagging when she appeared at the BAFTAS in February wearing a halter-style Louis Vuitton dress that exposing her sternum and collar bone.

But the NYC-based celeb stylist, who has worked with designers like Khaite, noted that Stone was slightly more covered up at the Oscars, too. She wore a silvery-white cap-sleeved Gucci gown with an Empire-style bodice that kept her chest under wraps.

“Emma Stone was one of the best dressed of the evening,” the NYC stylist said. “She did look extremely chic.”

Page Six has reached out to Stone and Moore for comment.
