Did Derek Hough let a major secret slip on Dancing with the Stars?
On the ABC dance competition’s Dedication Night on Oct. 14, the judge — who is expecting his first child with wife Hayley Erbert Hough — had nothing but praise for Olympic gold medalist Jordan Chiles and her partner Ezra Sosa’s a Viennese Waltz to “Daughters” by John Mayer.
The performance was dedicated to the gymnast’s father, Timothy Chiles, who also appeared in the dance and spoke about the importance of father-daughter relationships.
“Watching you two dance really made me excited to have that own, my own moment with my…,” Hough, 40, said before he stopped himself — briefly looking to the side — before concluding, “my own child.”
“It’s so beautiful,” he added. “There’s a tenderness. It was simple. There was a care to it. It was just a really beautiful dance. And I hope you both cherish that moment.”
“Well done,” he concluded.
Derek and Hayley first announced that they’re expecting their first child in a sweet video on Instagram on July 22, a little less than two years after they were married in Monterey County, Calif., in August 2023.
In the video, Derek walks over to his wife and the two embrace while overlooking a scenic view. Hayley then flashes a strip of sonogram photos at the camera as the couple smiles and sways in the sunlight. “We can’t believe the biggest thing to happen to us could be so small ♥️,” they captioned their joint video post.
Last month, Derek opened up to PEOPLE about his excitement to become a father.
“Going to Disneyland, or going on trips, and just seeing their wonderment, and their eyes, just wide open. I can’t wait to experience things for the first time, with my beautiful child,” he said of what he is looking forward to for their soon-to-be family of three.
No matter how busy he gets —between Dancing with the Stars and taking on a hosting role for Extra — he said he is focused on being present for Hayley.
“Being present is, for me, the most important thing,” he said. “So yes, I’m busy. Yes, I’m going to be doing Dancing with the Stars, Extra. I’m launching a new convention, all these different projects, a documentary.”
“But being present with my wife, during this time, and then, now, being a father in a couple months, that’s my number one, always,” he added. “That will always take priority, no matter how busy I get.”
