Donald Trump Appears to Ignore Cheryl Hines as the Actress Tries to Shake His Hand During UFC Event with RFK Jr.

Donald Trump appeared to ignore Cheryl Hines as she extended her hand for a handshake during UFC 314 in Miami over the weekend.

On Saturday, April 12, the 78-year-old president and a few members of his administration — including Elon Musk, Kash Patel and Hines’ husband Robert F. Kennedy Jr. — attended the fighting match and sat ringside at the Kaseya Center.

In one clip from the event’s stream, which was shared online by multiple social media users, Trump can be seen shaking hands and greeting several people in attendance, eventually walking up to Kennedy, 71, his secretary of Health and Human Services, giving him a quick handshake before pulling him in for a hug.

Hines, 59, then can be seen next in line for a greeting. As she puts a hand out and looks directly at Trump, he walks past her.

Later in the evening, however, a different video shared online showed Trump conversing with Hines, who was seated a row behind him.

A source tells PEOPLE of the moment, “This was simply an unintentional oversight, which can happen in a large crowd in a public arena. There is no way this was intentional.”

Representatives for the Trump administration did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment on Sunday, April 13.

Hines has supported her husband on the road to his U.S. Department of Health and Human Services position. Back in January, the Curb Your Enthusiasm star appeared in the crowd during Kennedy’s Senate confirmation hearing, following Trump’s nomination.

A source told PEOPLE in November 2024 that Hines was “going with the flow” as her husband aligned himself with Trump following the election that year.

“Now with Trump winning, even though she was very unhappy with this decision to join the Trump wagon, she is making the best of it,” the source said. “She loves Bobby.”

Hines has been critical of Trump in the past. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in January 2024, the actress spoke about how Trump had “insulted Ted Cruz’s wife about her looks” in 2016 — referencing when the president shared a side-by-side of his wife, Melania Trump, with Cruz’s wife, Heidi Cruz, on social media.

“That’s so ridiculous and disrespectful that he would say something disrespectful about Ted Cruz’s wife,” she said at the time. “She has nothing to do with any of this. And I’m sure Ted Cruz will never forget that. … Then cut to Trump as president and Ted Cruz couldn’t be happier.”

Hines added: “I’d think, ‘Why am I holding on so tightly?’ I don’t need Ted Cruz to be mad at Trump. I need to let it all go. I was holding on so tightly for so long. Even when Trump was elected, I had to really have a long talk with myself because I thought, ‘I’m not going to make it through these four years.’ ”

The star has interacted with Trump beyond this weekend’s UFC outing. Hines joined her husband and the president during Kennedy’s swearing-in ceremony on Feb. 13, when Trump gave her a hug.

According to The New York Times, the UFC event marked the second that Trump has attended during his latest term.

Others in attendance included Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Senator Ted Cruz and Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard.
