Drew Barrymore Recalls Being Abruptly Ghosted by Date: ‘I Would Never Do That’

Drew Barrymore says she was ghosted by a date recently.
“I texted him and I was like, ‘Lovely to see you again the other night,’” Barrymore, 50, recalled during the Monday, March 24, episode of her daytime talk show. “We went back and forth twice and then he ended with ‘Ha.’ And I haven’t heard anything.”
Without naming names, she continued: “So it just happens. I don’t know why! I don’t know why. I would never do that. It doesn’t cross my mind to behave like that. Like, if you put a fishing pole in it, why aren’t you gonna follow through?”
Valerie Bertinelli and Ross Mathews — both regulars on Barrymore’s show — weighed in on the anonymous ghoster, with Bertinelli, 64, quipping, “Don’t bait the hook if you’re not gonna reel it in” and Mathews, 45, joking, “There’s a lot of other things you could do with your worm, you know what I mean?”
Barrymore, nothing if not relatable, reassured her viewers that getting ghosted happens to “all of us” — including “good people who wouldn’t treat other people like that necessarily.”
The 50 First Dates star and her friends analyzed the suitor’s last text to her.
“Today, my friend said, ‘Well, did he answer the ha with one a?’” Barrymore revealed. “I’m not kidding. This happened. And I was like, ‘No, it was like five or six a’s.’ And they were like, ‘Oh no, that’s great!’”
Mathews concurred. “As a man, and I am, it’s slightly more encouraging if it was like, ‘hahahahaha,’” he said. “Because that means it’s like, the conversation’s going. It wasn’t like ‘Ha,’ period, right? It was ‘Haaaa, what’s next?’”
Barrymore added that she doesn’t want to “date in a way that if I get four a’s, I’m in. I don’t know what that means. It’s cryptic out there, so let’s just not indulge in people who waste our time. Those people are actually timesavers.”
She was previously married to art consultant Will Kopelman from 2012 to 2016. The exes coparent their daughters Olive, 12, and Frankie, 10.
In February, the “Never Been Kissed” actress exclusively told Us Weekly that she is enjoying the stability of working in TV, spending quality time with her kids and quietly dating as a single mom.
“I’d love somebody who inspired me,” she told Us. “Who knows as much as I do or has worked on themselves as much as I have. I cannot go backwards.”
But while she’s “open” to a relationship, she is also content to be single. “I never feel like something’s missing,” she explained earlier this year.
The month she turned 50, Barrymore recalled to Us: “I was so capable of having fun and experiencing joy, but I don’t know if I was happy. There’s such a big difference, and now I’m actually happy. This decade has truly helped me find ways into choosing happiness, and I have to choose it every day over and over again.”
