Elizabeth Chambers Shares ‘Heartbreak’ from Armie Hammer Split in Series About Toxic Couples: ‘No One Is Immune’

Elizabeth Chambers is channeling her own experiences as she leads a new docuseries titled Toxic.

In the first trailer for the six-part Investigation Discovery series, Chambers is shown interviewing a woman about a harrowing attack she endured at the hands of a partner. Chambers also briefly references her own experiences with ex-husband Armie Hammer.

“When it comes to toxic relationships, no one is immune,” she says, as a photo of Chambers, 42, and Hammer, 38, in happier times is displayed on the rearview mirror of a car.

“Navigating through my own heartbreak took me back to my roots as an investigative journalist,” Chambers continues, before the trailer cuts to Chambers interviewing experts as well as other women and men speaking about their traumas.

Chambers and Hammer married in 2010 and announced their split in July 2020. Days later, she filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences. Their divorce was finalized in June 2023.

After they parted ways, Hammer was accused by multiple women of abuse, which the Call Me by Your Name actor denied.

Chambers later appeared on the Hulu reality series Grand Cayman: Secrets in Paradise, which filmed in spring 2023. When the show aired in April 2024, she called her “very public” divorce from Hammer “absolute hell.”

The BIRD Bakery founder has also been vocal about her support for her ex amid his recovery. “All I’ve ever wanted is for him to be sober, healthy and happy. And he is that,” she told Elle in February 2023.

Chambers recently celebrated her first Christmas in Los Angeles since moving back from Grand Cayman, posting photos of herself with daughter Harper, 10, and son Ford, 8, as well as a rare snapshot of Hammer, hanging with their children.

“He’s really present when he’s with the kids, and that’s all I can hope for,” Chambers said of Hammer in her 2023 chat with Elle. “All you want is for your children to have two solid parents, right?”

“That’s always the goal, so anything I can do to support that, I will,” she added.

In the trailer for Toxic, Chambers says she wants to “dive deeply into the attention” and “patterns” of toxic relationships in the series, including “gaslighting, love-bombing, isolation and bald-faced lies.”

“The court of public opinion is very hard to reverse,” she says later in the preview while talking to one woman, adding, “Rarely are men held accountable.”

“I want to find the truth,” Chambers adds.

Toxic premieres Monday, May 5 at 10 p.m. ET on ID, and will also be available to stream on Max.
