Eric Dane’s posthumous memoir release date announced
Eric Dane’s posthumous memoir, “My Book of Days: A Memoir in Moments,” is set to be released on Nov. 3, with the late actor having made “the deliberate decision” to finish the book after being diagnosed with ALS in 2023.
According to a Thursday press release, Penguin Random House announced that Dane “wanted his daughters and readers to have these words. Publishing it as planned allows him to continue speaking, in his own voice, with the clarity and courage that defined him.”
“He was working on the manuscript right up to the end,” the release added.
Maria Shriver’s imprint, The Open Field, will publish the book.
The author said she was “honored” that Dane, who tragically died at age 53 on Feb. 19 after a 10-month battle with the neurodegenerative disease, chose her team to release the memoir.
“He told me he wanted his family to know how much he loved them and he wanted to leave them a story they could be proud of,” Shriver, 70, added.
Dane told the publishing house before his death: “I wake up every morning, and I’m immediately reminded that this is real — this illness, this challenge — and that’s exactly why I’m writing this book.”
“I want to capture the moments that shaped me — the beautiful days, the hard ones, the ones I never took for granted — so that if nothing else, people who read it will remember what it means to live with heart,” the “Grey’s Anatomy” star continued. “If sharing this helps someone find meaning in their own days, then my story is worth telling.”
The memoir’s official synopsis states, “‘My Book of Days‘ captures everything from the grind of his early years in Hollywood and the hard-won peace of sobriety to the profound clarity that came with his ALS diagnosis.”
Dane had a “newfound perspective” after being diagnosed with the disease: “Our days are all we truly have.”
In his book, the “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” star also took time to reflect on life after he was gone, sharing thoughts meant for his daughters, Billie, 15, and Georgia, 14.
Along with his memoir, Dane shared a final, public message to his girls, whom he shared with ex-wife Rebecca Gayheart, on the Netflix series “Famous Last Words.”
In the interview, which was released after he passed, the “Euphoria” actor addressed the teenagers, noting: “Fight with every ounce of your being and with dignity. When you face challenges, health or otherwise, fight.”
“Never give up. Fight until your last breath. This disease is slowly taking my body, but it will never take my spirit,” Dane detailed. “I hope I’ve demonstrated that you can face anything. You can face the end of your days. You can face hell with dignity. Fight girls, and hold your heads high.”
Through tears, he expressed, “Billie and Georgia, you are my heart. You are my everything. Good night. I love you. Those are my last words.”
Dane and Gayheart wed in 2004, but after 13 years of marriage, the “Jawbreaker” star filed for divorce in 2018. Last March, however, they called off their divorce.
The actress continued to show up for Dane throughout his ALS battle and later explained that she made the move in order to teach their daughters to be there for family even “when times are at their worst.”
Gayheart also clarified that she and Dane hadn’t lived together for eight years.
After Dane’s death, a GoFundMe account was set up, which states that he left “behind his devoted wife, Rebecca, and his two teenage daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world.”
“Following his diagnosis, even as his own health declined, he remained deeply committed to helping others facing the same devastating disease.”
“As his illness progressed far more quickly than anyone could have imagined, Eric’s friends have come together to create this GoFundMe to support his girls and their future needs.“
