  • Erin Andrews clapped back at critics who slammed her recent comments about working on the holidays
  • Former ESPN host Trey Wingo wrote, “That’s literally what they pay you for,” in a post reacting to Andrews’ comments
  • Andrews explained that she was responding to a young fan who was specifically asking about the sacrifices sideline reporters make for their jobs

Broadcaster Erin Andrews had a perfect response after her recent comments about working on holidays were criticized.

On an episode of her podcast Calm Down with Erin and Charissa, Andrews, 47, discussed the sacrifices she makes for her job, and why “you have to love what you do to work in sports” because it requires missing “out on a lot of holidays,” and other events like weddings.

After the clip was shared on X, Andrews began facing criticism from people who claimed her comments came off as ungrateful for her job and not acknowledging other Americans working on Thanksgiving, notably those who don’t earn nearly the same salary or notoriety for the positions keeping them clocked in on holidays.

Former ESPN host Trey Wingo agreed, writing, “That’s literally what they pay you for,” on X on Nov. 26. “Erin said it herself once: they pay you for the travel and the sacrifices because doing the games is the fun part.”

On Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 27, Andrews responded to Wingo on X. “It sure is Trey. And I’m sure you went back and saw that I wasn’t complaining about working,” she began in a reply.

Andrews noted that she made the comments during “a segment where we answer questions from people” and she was responding to a “young woman” who was about “being a sideline reporter.”

Specifically, Andrews said she was trying to explain to the young fan “what to know about” her career and “what you miss” when you take on her broadcasting job. “My whole point its not just abt [sic] wanting to be on camera and hanging with athletes. You have to work and love it. And deal with overreactions to click bait,” she concluded.

Before Wingo’s post, ESPN’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers reporter Jenna Laine reacted to Andrews’ comments.

Laine noted that she “appreciates” what Andrews was “trying to say,” but added, “but let’s consider the folks working 2-3 jobs in retail, in warehouses and in the service industry right now, just trying to make ends meet.”

“They’re not getting time with their families either,” Laine continued. “This would be a dream for them. Some people have lost jobs and are living out of their cars as we speak, or they don’t know how they’re going to keep the lights on or put food on the table. Their kids won’t get anything for Christmas. I mean, we actually get FED on the job. I appreciate her hustle and that of my peers. But let’s have some perspective.”

NFL reporter Albert Breer also echoed a similar sentiment and wrote that it’s typical to lose out on major life moments and holidays while working.

Andrews agreed and replied, “And we love it so much bc it’s the best job in the world!!!”
