Class might have just let out on Abbott Elementary but fans are already looking forward to the next school year.

The fourth season of the Emmy-winning hit comedy saw the Abbott staff experiencing personal highs — like the romance between Quinta Brunson’s Janine and Tyler James Williams’ Gregory — and professional lows, including Ava’s (Janelle James) role suddenly changing.

The latest installment featured a crossover with It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, an event that series creator Brunson told Variety was inspired by mashup episodes of Disney Channel originals, like The Suite Life of Zack and Cody, That’s So Raven and Hannah Montana.

“Those things are what reinvigorate TV viewers, TV watchers, and I think it’s always fun to find ways to reinvigorate our audiences,” she explained. “I just live for those kind of magic moments, and I’m excited to be able to bring one to TV with Abbott.”

Has Abbott Elementary been renewed for season 5?

Yes, Abbott Elementary will be returning for season 5. The school comedy scored an early renewal in January 2025, becoming the first ABC series to be announced for the 2025-2026 season.

In January 2025, the official Abbott Elementary Instagram account posted a video of the students counting down to the renewal news.

“Season 5, here we come! 🫡 Join your favorite staff and students for more #AbbottElementary on ABC and stream on Hulu,” the caption read.

When will Abbott Elementary season 5 premiere?

No word yet on when season 5 of Abbott Elementary will be released, but we can expect a fall debut since it was announced as part of ABC’s 2025-2026 schedule. The fourth season premiered on Oct. 9, 2024, and consisted of 22 episodes.

In an interview with TV Insider, Brunson said Abbott Elementary tries to sync up with the school year.

“In our ongoing effort to work along with the school calendar, we start on October 9th this year, which is when the season airs. [It’s] your nondescript October day,” she explained, referring to the start of season 4.

Who is returning for Abbott Elementary season 5?

Although there have been no official casting announcements about the upcoming season, the main cast is expected to return for new episodes.

The roster includes Quinta Brunson, Tyler James Williams, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Janelle James, Lisa Ann Walter, Chris Perfetti and William Stanford Davis.

In a February 2024 interview with PEOPLE, Perfetti said, “Right now I’m feeling very attached to my Abbott family. It is a real gift to be able to play a character for as long as I’ve been able to be Jacob and these people are my family now — there was a connection from the get-go.”

Later that fall, in October 2024, Walter revealed to PEOPLE that they received salary increases ahead of the season 4 premiere.

“Yes, we got a little more money in there and all the Hot Pockets we could eat,” she quipped.

What will Abbott Elementary season 5 be about?

Brunson and the Abbott team have not given hints about what’s ahead for the funny Philadelphians in the new season.

When PEOPLE debuted the key art for Abbott Elementary season 4 in September 2024, Brunson teased, “It’s gonna be a fun season of TV.”

Executive producer Justin Halpern added, “We are really excited to grow these characters in season 4 and keep making comedy.”

While exact plot details are unknown, the Abbott employees are likely to experience more antics soon.
