Ferris Bueller’s Day Off may be endlessly rewatchable, but star Mia Sara — who played iconic cool girl Sloane Peterson in the 1986 film — revealed that she hasn’t seen it in years.
The actress, 57, returned to the big screen in Mike Flanagan’s new film The Life of Chuck, and she recently caught up with PEOPLE about her past and present projects.
When asked about the last time she saw the ’80s classic, Sara replied, ”Oh my goodness. A very long time ago.”
“It’s not really fun to watch yourself. It’s not really fun,” she explained.
And while the actress said she doesn’t generally keep in touch with the Ferris cast, she said they held a Zoom reunion during COVID.
“We did a reunion thing during COVID — there was a reunion thing, which was nice. It was nice to see everybody,” she said.
Sara also shared her favorite memory from filming the movie, revealing that it involved the parade scene in which Ferris (Matthew Broderick) sings “Twist and Shout” on a parade float while her character and the long-suffering Cameron (Alan Ruck) dance among the growing crowd.
“I had so much fun doing that parade scene,” Sara recalled.

“That was so crazy. Because we would do the dance and then we’d get in a van and they’d drive us blocks away, and the camera would go, and then we’d do the dance again and wait for Matthew to pass. And so it was just this crazy let’s catch it as many times as we can. So that was a great moment,” she added.
As for whether her kids have watched her in the ’80s classic?
“Oh, of course. My kids have absolutely seen it,” Sara told PEOPLE.
“I think when they were younger, it was just embarrassing. My kids, because they grew up in Hollywood — they grew up in Los Angeles — they had a lot of friends whose parents were actors who were still really working all the time, and so they were kind of bummed that I stopped working.”
These days, when she’s not acting, the New York native says she fills her time reading and riding her horse at her farmhouse in England.

“It’s a 17th-century farmhouse that we’re just decorating and doing up, and I ride with my horse a lot, and I read a lot of crime fiction … And I cook a lot,” she said. “I started [cooking] when I was really young and I met my husband, and I just felt like I kind of [needed] to get a life. And I got a really, really good one. So that’s what I’ve been doing.”
Today, Sara can be seen in the new sci-fi drama The Life of Chuck, in which she and actor Mark Hamill play a married couple. When speaking about the experience, she said that she was in disbelief when she learned she would be working with Hamill, a ’70s legend.
“I couldn’t believe when Mike [Flanagan] told me that … Mark Hamill was going to play the grandpa. I couldn’t believe it. I get to be married to Luke Skywalker. It’s the greatest thing,” she said.
The Life of Chuck also stars Tom Hiddleston and Jacob Tremblay and is playing in theaters now.
