Gavin Rossdale Shares Rare Glimpse Into His Coparenting Relationship With Ex-Wife Gwen Stefani
Gavin Rossdale gave rare insight into his coparenting dynamic with ex-wife Gwen Stefani more than 10 years after they called it quits.
“It is an interesting kind of [relationship],” Rossdale, 60, told Fox News Digital on Monday, March 30, of his relationship with Stefani, 56, as coparents to their three sons. “It’s a two-lane highway, you know, but they don’t ever seem to merge, which is fine.”
The Bush singer — who shares Kingston, 19, Zuma, 17, and Apollo, 12, with Stefani — explained that it’s not a bad thing that he and his ex stick to their own lane while raising their kids. (Rossdale is also the father of daughter Daisy, 37, whom he shares with ex Pearl Lowe.)
“[She’s] probably doing the best she can, and I’m doing the best I can,” Rossdale, who split from Stefani in 2015, continued. “And the kids are growing up, so I’m a proud proponent of the system. It’s fine.”
As for the qualities he’s trying to instill in his boys, Rossdale said it all comes down to not being a “jerk.”
“Making them likable. I think that if you’ve got kids that are unlikable, they’ve got a tough life ahead, you know,” Rossdale said. “Life is hard enough without being a jerk, without being kind of aware of other people, mindful of other people, considerate of other people, empathetic.”
The musician noted, “And so all those things that I try to do my best in my life to be … Just try to show by example with my kids, consistent friends, consistent people around and a sort of a steady approach to life.”
Rossdale added that he’s seen firsthand with his sons how hard growing up can be and the pressures the younger generation are facing.
“I feel connected to the pressure that young people have in terms of what to do. And if you go to college, what the hell are you gonna do in college, and then how are you going to pay off your student loans, and how are you going to go into the workplace?” he shared. “And it just seems very, very hard for people. Very, very hard. And I’m not sure if it’s getting easier.”
Rossdale and Stefani tied the knot in 2002, announcing their separation in 2015 after more than 12 years of marriage.
“While the two of us have come to the mutual decision that we will no longer be partners in marriage, we remain partners in parenthood and are committed to jointly raising our three sons in a happy and healthy environment,” the former couple told Us Weekly in a joint statement at the time. “To that end, we respectfully request privacy from the media during this time.”
In the decade since, Rossdale and Stefani have continued to make their kids their priority while keeping the majority of their feelings about one another private.
After Stefani married Blake Shelton in July 2021, she opened up about her newfound love and how their relationship helped heal the heartbreak she experienced after her divorce from Rossdale.
“Meeting my husband felt like a second chance at life, because when my family fell apart it was a catastrophe,” Stefani told The Guardian in November 2024. “How do you pick yourself up from that? But God put this other person there to love me.”
Rossdale, for his part, has also moved on romantically and is now dating Xhoana Xheneti.
