‘Ghostbusters’ star Ernie Hudson jokes Bill Murray doesn’t return his calls — and reveals when he’ll retire
Who you gonna not call…
“Ghostbusters” star Ernie Hudson, 80, exclusively tells Page Six that his former co-star Bill Murray, “will call me out of the blue and invite me to something or other that I’m probably not able to do.”
“I tell him, ‘You call me out of the blue. But when I call you, you never return my call!’” Hudson says, adding that they’ve discussed “taking a trip.”
Murray famously doesn’t really use a cell phone.
Hudson originally wasn’t going to take anything from the set of the 1984 classic, but co-star Harold Ramis changed his mind.
“I didn’t think we’d be allowed to take [the iconic costume]. And Harold Ramis said, ‘Ernie. We’re the Ghostbusters. Take the jumpsuit!’ So, I have my jumpsuit,” Hudson says.
Ramis died in 2014 at 69, but Hudson is still in touch with Murray, 75, and Dan Aykroyd, 73.
Meanwhile, his wife, former flight attendant Linda Kingsberg, is friends with Aykroyd’s wife, Donna Dixon, which keeps him connected to the former “SNL” star.
Hudson has had a long and storied career, on everything from “Ghostbusters” to the “Toy Story” franchise to HBO’s “Oz” to “Miss Congeniality.”
Currently, he stars with Donnie Wahlberg on CBS’s “Blue Bloods” spinoff, “Boston Blue.”
“Blue Bloods,” which starred Wahlberg and Tom Selleck and aired from 2010 to 2024, followed a law enforcement family in New York City.
“Boston Blue” (Fridays at 10 p.m.) follows Danny as he moves from the Big Apple to Boston and becomes friends with the Silver family, led by patriarch Reverend Peters (Hudson).
The April 3 episode “Beautiful Broken Things” has personal drama and complications for Reverend Peters, which Hudson says was “very revealing for me, character-wise” and was “great to be able to play.”
The actor isn’t new to this world, as he also briefly appeared in a Season 8 episode of “Blue Bloods,” playing a troubled principal.
“Maybe [that character] was a long lost cousin of the Reverend Peters,” he quipped.
Selleck hasn’t appeared on “Boston Blue” and has expressed hesitation about it, since he was outspoken about his displeasure with CBS for canceling “Blue Bloods” in 2024.
“I would love to have a chance to work with Tom [Selleck], just to meet him,” says Hudson.
“Because I’ve been out here acting for over 60 years and he’s been around about all that time as well. I’m still hoping he might visit [‘Boston Blue’].”
Hudson is still going strong in his eighth decade, and has no plans to retire. He attributes that partly to the “Ghostbusters” cast.
“I think the fact that I’m still active after all these years is due a large part to just working with those guys,” he says, recalling how Ramis, Murray, and Aykroyd were the bigger stars at the time, and he learned from watching them.
“You always learn, even on [‘Boston Blue’], working with the younger actors. And you also hope to be giving something back in return.”
He adds that he might consider retiring only, “if there becomes a time when I’m challenged physically or mentally to do my work.”
“But right now, I love working. I love working with some of the younger actors. As long as I can deliver and have fun doing it, I will always be doing something.”
A photo of Hudson looking fit even went viral in 2024, when he was 78. He tells Page Six that his routine includes doing 100 pushups daily.
“It’s funny – all the attention – but it’s nice.”
His secret? He says that as an actor, “I’ve always believed you can’t wait to get ready. You always have to be ready. So I’ve never put on a lot of weight that I had to get rid of. I just fit in my little routine, and try to stay consistent.”
“Boston Blue” airs Fridays at 10 p.m. on CBS.
