‘Ghosts’ Lead Rose McIver Reveals Why She Will Be ‘Absent’ at the Start of Season 6: ‘Will Be Back’

Rose McIver revealed why she will be “absent” from several episodes when Ghosts returns for season 6.

McIver, 37, shared a photo of a baby’s hand, writing via Instagram on Friday, September 25, “Keen eyed viewers will notice that Sam is a little absent at the start of this season of Ghosts — I’ve been a wee bit preoccupied but will be back to join everyone soon!”

She continued: “Huge thanks to everyone for your patience. I love both my jobs and feel really fortunate to be supported in both.”

McIver’s post appeared to confirm that she welcomed baby No. 2 with husband George Byrne. The couple, who got married in 2023, previously expanded their family with a daughter in 2024. As a result, Ghosts went out of their way to hide McIver’s baby bump in season 3.

“We’re not writing it in. Currently, Jay and Sam aren’t going to have kids,” showrunner Joe Wiseman told TV Insider in February 2024. “That is something that could happen down the line.”

Wiseman noted that they weren’t ruling out a baby in the future — just not right now, adding, “Yeah, we’re definitely open to it. It just felt a little early in the series to make such a big change.”

Showrunner Joe Port, meanwhile, showed support for the idea of Sam and Jay becoming parents later. “We’re not writing [the pregnancy] in, but that doesn’t mean they can’t have [a baby] in future seasons,” he added. “It would be fun to see all the ghosts’ perspectives on parenting.”

Ghosts, which premiered on CBS in 2021, follows married couple Sam (McIver) and Jay (Utkarsh Ambudkar) after they inherit a country estate. Their plan to convert the historic home into a bed and breakfast doesn’t pan out when a near-death experience in the house causes Sam to suddenly see the ghosts who live there.

The comedy is expected to return for holiday specials in 2026 before making an official return midseason.

CBS announced its schedule in April, and viewers couldn’t help but notice some substantial changes. Ghosts, Matlock and NCIS: Sydney received a shakeup by having their premieres moved to 2027 for midseason. They will join the new show Einstein, which is finally premiering in 2027 as well.

Matlock‘s time slot will be given to Elsbeth to allow Cupertino to premiere on the same night. NCIS: Sydney, meanwhile, is moving to midseason as NCIS: Origins — which received a shorter episode order — takes over to pair off with NCIS: New York.
