Gillian Anderson Gave Ryan Coogler the Ultimate Stamp of Approval on His X-Files Reboot — and Told Him ‘Call Me’

Gillian Anderson is giving the green light on the return of The X-Files!
The actress, 56, recently opened up about Ryan Coogler’s planned reboot of the sci-fi drama series, in which she starred as Agent Dana Scully. During an appearance on ITV1’s This Morning, Anderson voiced her support for the project, even revealing that she would consider getting on board.
“I spoke to [Coogler], and what I said was, ‘If anyone were to do it, I think you are the perfect person, and best of luck,” she shared, also telling the Black Panther filmmaker, “Call me.”
“At some point, if the phone rings and it’s good and it feels like the right time, perhaps,” The Fall star added.
This isn’t the first time Anderson has played coy about reviving her beloved character, who she played for all 11 seasons from 1993 until 2002. In an interview on the Today show last year, she praised Coogler for being “a big of a genius,” although she noted that she’d have to wait to know if the reboot was actually happening before making any decisions about her future.
“Whether I am involved in it is a whole other thing,” she said, before clarifying, “I’m not saying no.”
“I think [Coogler is] really cool and I think if he did it, it would probably be done incredibly well,” she continued. “And maybe I’ll pop in for a little something something.”
Anderson was already part of a two-season revival of the series, which ran for two seasons from 2016 to 2018. She and her original costar David Duchovny, who played her FBI partner, both reprised their roles.
The show also led to two feature film spinoffs, The X-Files in 1998 and The X-Files: I Want to Believe in 2008.

Following the massive success of his recently released movie, Sinners, Coogler teased his excitement about moving on to The X-Files reboot earlier this month.
“I’ve been excited about that for a long time, and I’m fired up to get back to it. Some of those episodes, if we do our jobs right, will be really f—ing scary,” he said on an episode of The Last Podcast on the Left. “We’re gonna try to make something really great, bro, and really be something for the real X-Files fans, and maybe find some new ones.”
As for Anderson’s possible return, Coogler remained vague, but said: “She’s incredible, and fingers crossed there.”
The X Files is streaming in full on Prime Video.
