‘Grey’s Anatomy’ star Patrick Dempsey gets emotional over Eric Dane’s death in interview
Patrick Dempsey somberly honored his late “Grey’s Anatomy” co-star Eric Dane in a new interview.
When a News Talk FM reporter shared her “sincere condolences” with Dempsey on Tuesday, he appeared visibly emotional.
The 60-year-old agreed with the journalist’s description of losing a loved one as “awful, stark and life-altering.”
Dempsey went on to share his own take on the “very hard” grieving process, explaining that his father passed away when the Golden Globe nominee was “very young” and his mother has since died as well.
“Now several friends in the last year, I’ve lost,” Dempsey continued.
He gushed over Dane specifically, and called the “Euphoria” star “so beloved,” something he believes the late actor “would be really happy to know.”
Dempsey added, “I know a lot of people reached out to him before his passing to keep track. He was so beloved and is deeply missed.”
The “Enchanted” star first addressed Dane’s death at 53 on “The Chris Evans Breakfast Show” Friday, one day after the “Countdown” star lost his battle to ALS.
“I just woke up this morning and I was very sad to read the news,” Dempsey said. “It’s hard to put into words. I feel really so sad for his children.”
Dane, notably, shared daughters Billie, 15, and Georgia, 14, with his estranged wife, Rebecca Gayheart.
A GoFundMe was started for the teenagers by their dad’s friends, which has reached nearly $500,000.
Dane was diagnosed with ALS in April 2025 and continued acting while navigating the disease.
Dempsey opened up about Dane’s final days last week as his former colleague “really start[ed] to lose his ability to speak.”
Dempsey explained, “He was bedridden and it was very hard for him to swallow, so the quality of his life was deteriorating so rapidly.”
He reflected on their times together on the “Grey’s Anatomy” set together between 2006 and 2012, when Dempsey and Eric Dane played Dr. Derek “McDreamy” Shepherd and Dr. Mark “McSteamy” Sloan, respectively.
“He brought so much fun to it,” Dempsey recalled, remembering that they “got along instantly.”
Other former cast members have posted tributes to Dane, from Katherine Heigl to Kevin McKidd.
