How Steve Martin and Martin Short Paid Tribute to Late Diane Keaton During Live Las Vegas Show

Steve Martin and Martin Short honored their late Father of the Bride costar Diane Keaton in a touching tribute during their recent Las Vegas show.

Martin, 80, and Short, 75, took the stage at Encore Theater at the Wynn, using the final few moments of their Saturday, October 11, set to share a photo of Keaton on the screen behind them. Attendees posted videos via X of the comedians gesturing toward the screen as the crowd roared with applause. Short blew a kiss to Keaton’s photo before he and Martin lifted their glasses to clink cheers and toast to the actress.

Keaton died at age 79 on Saturday, sending shockwaves through Hollywood and prompting several of her former costars to pay tribute to her life and legendary career. Martin shared a screenshot via Instagram from an Interview Magazine piece where Short asked Keaton, “Who’s sexier, me or Steve Martin?”

Keaton replied, “I mean, you’re both idiots.”

In the same interview, Keaton and Martin’s playful friendship was on full display, with Martin asking, “Who is the most unpleasant actor you’ve ever worked with — besides Marty and me?”

“Well, obviously, there will never be anybody who will trouble and bother me as much as you and Marty,” Keaton responded. “But I’m not going to answer that question, because that would hurt somebody’s feelings. Who is the worst? It’s not either of you.”

In addition to recalling the unforgettable interview, Martin shared a photo of Keaton via X on Saturday, writing, “Loved! ‘La dee da,la dee da.’”

The following day, the Only Murders in the Building actor posted a picture of a playbill via X, circling his name and the name Diane Hall, as Keaton was billed under her birth name at the time. (Keaton went by her mother’s maiden name once she burst onto the scene in Hollywood due to an actress already being registered as Diane Hall in the Actors’ Equity Association.)

“This playbill is from a 1964 college production of Carousel. Diane ‘Hall’ (Keaton) is the lead; I’m a stage hand,” Martin explained in the caption.

Keaton, Martin and Short costarred in 1991’s Father of the Bride, 1995’s Father of the Bride Part II and 2020’s Father of the Bride Part 3(ish).

“Thank you both for the Father Of The Bride movies. My forever comfort movies. ❤️,” one person commented underneath the playbill post, while a second Instagram user said, “It’s cool you saved that all these years, Steve.”

“I didn’t realize you guys went that far back. So sorry for your loss. She was always one of my favorites and I hate that she’s gone,” a third person wrote.

Keaton’s other costars, including Because I Said So’s Lauren Graham and Mandy Moore, also paid their respects to the actress via social media. Graham, 58, posted part of a letter that Keaton had written to her before her death via Instagram on Monday, October 13.

“Please don’t be a stranger. Please invite me to one of your dinners. And finally …. Please hug yourself in the morning, and remember to write your book, and don’t let yourself get anxious, you big winner you. Love, Di,” the letter said in part, referencing a book Graham eventually wrote.
