Howie Mandel snaps at Kelly Ripa in awkward on-camera moment
Howie Mandel wasn’t happy with Kelly Ripa after the TV host made a comment about his looks and age after he celebrated his 70th birthday.
Ripa and her husband, Mark Consuelos, opened the interaction on Monday’s episode of “Live with Kelly and Mark” by congratulating the “America’s Got Talent” judge on reaching the big milestone.
“It doesn’t make any sense,” Ripa, 55, added. Mandel then asked, “What do you mean it doesn’t make any sense?”
Consuelos, 54, attempted to clarify his wife’s comments for the comedian, telling him it’s because “you look great.”
“That I look great?” Mandel repeated. “That doesn’t mean anything.”
“No, no, no,” Mandel continued. “I don’t like that because that’s a caveat, ’cause you tell someone you’re 70, and they go, ‘you look great—’”
At this point, Ripa interjected to assure Mandel that the hosts were “not saying you look great for 70 [years old]. Rather, “We’re saying you look great and I don’t believe you’re 70.”
However, Mandel still wasn’t having it. He doubled down on his point that the couple was saying exactly that “without saying 70.”
“No, no. It’s like saying you’re smart for a stupid person,” he explained, earning laughs from the audience. “‘Oh, you seem smart, you seem smart,’ you see, no, I don’t look good.”
Consuelos — who hasn’t shied away from flexing his good looks on the talk show — made one more attempt to salvage the situation, telling Mandel that he does “look good.”
Finally, the comedian diffused the tense moment by teasingly agreeing he’s “gorgeous” and revealed his “ridiculous” workout routine that delivered the results.
“Your friend, [TV show host] Jerry O’Connell, got me into the most ridiculous workout I’ve ever done in my life,” Mandel said.
“I swim but have these cables which I tie onto my ankles and then I attach them to whatever is at the side of the pool.”
“Then he gave me these frying pan paddles and I swim for an hour and go nowhere,” he shared, noting that he gets “so lost in it.”
