Inside Nick Reiner’s Life in Jail: Blood-Stained Floors, Defunct Toilets and 3 Showers Per Week (Exclusive)
Accused killer Nick Reiner is sitting in an 80-square-foot cell at Twin Towers Correctional Facility in downtown Los Angeles, the nation’s largest mental health institution, which has been accused of unsanitary conditions, including blood-stained floors, visible mold and nonfunctioning toilets.
“Inmates wake up at 5:00 a.m. and lights out is at 9:00 p.m.,” Sergeant Christopher Lewis exclusively told Us Weekly about life for inmates at Twin Towers. (Nick, 32, was arrested on December 14, 2025, hours after his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, were discovered stabbed to death inside their Brentwood, California, home. On February 23, he pleaded not guilty to two counts of first-degree murder with special circumstances.)
“Inmates at Twin Towers are checked every 15 or 30 minutes, depending on their classification, by mental health clinicians,” according to Sergeant Lewis, who told Us that “showers are offered on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.”
Clothing for inmates “consists of the standard inmate shirt and pants, with colors based on classification,” he explained. “The only exception is a suicide-resistant gown instead of the shirt and pants, based on a mental health clinician’s assessment.” (Nick wore a light brown-colored jumpsuit for his arraignment last month after previously appearing in court wearing an anti-suicide vest.)
Nick and the other inmates at Twin Towers are served breakfast at 8 a.m., which Sergeant Lewis said usually consists of cereal, hard-boiled eggs, milk and bread with peanut butter and jelly. Lunch, including a sandwich, carrots and juice, is available at 12 p.m. and dinner is served at 6 p.m.
The last meal of the day is usually hot, with a typical example being a beef patty with gravy, mashed potatoes, green beans and fruit.
Sergeant Lewis confirmed to Us that after Nick pleaded not guilty to the brutal killings of Rob, 78, and Michele, 70, he was served a bologna sandwich for lunch and a chicken burrito with BBQ navy beans, mixed vegetables, apple sauce and chocolate milk for dinner.
Twin Towers consists of two high-rise towers and includes an in-house hospital facility/medical ward “that houses individuals with moderate and severe medical and mental health needs.” Sergeant Lewis said the only prohibition on commissary for these individuals is “items that can be used for self-harm (i.e., razors),” telling Us, “The prohibition is only made if a mental health clinician’s assessment deems it necessary. There are no visitation prohibitions.”
The facility where Nick is housed has been under scrutiny for its conditions, with a complaint filed against the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department, which oversees Twin Towers and other institutions, as recently as September 2025.
Following an inspection of Twin Towers on March 6, 2025, the Sybil Brand Commission inspectors reported “multiple nonfunctioning toilets, mattresses without required plastic covers, visible mold on walls and what appeared to be blood on walls and a mattress,” per the complaint obtained by Us.
In July 2025, the Sybil Brand Commission reported “continued unsanitary conditions at Twin Towers. One commissioner noted a trail of blood on the floor, which they were advised had been there for weeks.”
Nick’s facility was also accused of “exceeding” its inmate capacity by hundreds.
According to the complaint, from January 2020 through March 2025, the Board of State and Community Corrections found that Twin Towers “held an average daily population of 2,728 individuals, despite a capacity of 2,432,” and a high of 3,231.
It also outlined a study released by the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics for jail mortality rates from 2009 to 2018, which found that Los Angeles County had an average suicide rate of 25.8 percent. In 2018, the suicide rate was 30.3 percent as compared to the 6 percent rate in 2015. Data from the LA County Medical Examiner-Coroner indicated that 2021 marked the highest number of deaths by suicide inside Twin Towers and Men’s Central in eight years. In 2021, the suicide rate at Twin Towers and Men’s Central was about one per every 1,000 people, more than 10 times the suicide rate for Los Angeles County in 2020.
Nick’s mental health remains at the forefront as his case progresses, with a source previously telling Us that he had fired his psychiatrist and changed medications shortly before Rob and Michele were killed.
“The medical staff warned Rob and Michele not to let Nick live at home until he got his medication straightened out,” the insider said. (Nick got into a fight with his parents the night before their murders at Conan O’Brien’s holiday party; he had been staying in Rob and Michele’s guest house at the time.)
It’s been widely reported that Nick suffers from schizophrenia and has been open about his past struggles with drug addiction.
If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of life in prison without parole or the death penalty.
