Issa Rae Says Soccer Is ‘Competitive in the Best Way’ as Part Owner Of San Diego FC (Exclusive)

Issa Rae is feeling secure in her latest role — one that’s away from Hollywood!
PEOPLE spoke exclusively to the Insecure co-creator and actress, 40, about her latest business venture at the San Diego FC vs. Los Angeles FC Major League Soccer match in San Diego on Saturday, March 29.
Rae was recently announced as part owner of SDFC along with Nigerian singer-songwriter Tems, and tells PEOPLE working in the sports world is “extremely” different from TV.
“Soccer, what makes it so fun is one, it’s a sporting event. It’s live, it’s active. There’s so much. I guess the only similarity [with TV] is the teamwork.”
“You have to be in sync to be able to play the best game, maybe make the best show, but generally it’s so lively. So it’s competitive in the best way. And while there are moments of competition in the TV world, you don’t get to really see who’s on top. There’s a clear winner in soccer and [with] TV, it’s debatable,” Rae tells PEOPLE.
“I’ve seen Insecure be put in all these brackets. And it varies. There’s no one clear ‘Black girl show’ winner,” she adds.
Rae — who started with her YouTube series the Mis-Adventures of Awkward Black Girl before creating her Emmy-nominated HBO series Insecure and has since opened a restaurant, coffee shops and more — got Snapdragon Stadium hyped on Saturday for SDFC’s third match of its inaugural season in MLS.
The Barbie actress participated in a tradition reserved specifically for home games that involves carrying out “The Flow,” a charged up 3D spherical version of the San Diego FC crest, and placing it on a podium before fireworks erupt for an electrifying show before the game begins.
It’s made up of 18 lines representing the 18 cities of San Diego County, and symbolizes the team’s performance at a peak level while embracing the unique rhythm of life.
Following the February announcement of Rae and Tems’ SDFC partnership, the Black Mirror actress says she has an idea of which of them might come out triumphant in a hypothetical celebrity soccer match between the two.
Per the publication The Face, Tems was born in Nigeria but lived in London.
“We were talking about how different [soccer] is in the U.K. They get crazy,” Rae tells PEOPLE.
“Even me going out there and observing a game at a bar, I saw a fight break out, so she might take it. I’m not going to lie. So I’m practicing to get to her level.”
She also tells PEOPLE the chance to have ownership of the team “came about via an opportunity.”

“I’ve watched soccer, mostly internationally, and I was curious about MLS and I got asked to join the team,” she says. “I met Tom [Penn], the CEO, and I’m part of a group with Kwamena [Afful, founding director of Pave Investments] and Tems, and it’s just exciting to take part.”
SDFC secured their first home game victory against the LAFC Saturday with a final score of 3-2.
