Jamie Foxx had Quentin Tarantino cut scene from ‘Django Unchained’ to ‘protect’ A-list co-star

Jamie Foxx revealed he asked Quentin Tarantino to cut an “outlandish” scene from the 2012 film “Django Unchained” to “protect” his co-star Kerry Washington.

During an appearance on the “Baby, This Is Keke Palmer” podcast Tuesday, the “Ray” actor explained that the famed director had written in the script that Foxx’s character, Django, and his on-screen wife, Broomhilda von Shaft, whom Washington portrayed, were both raped.

“If you read the script, Broomhilda and Django get raped,” he told host Keke Palmer. “But once we got together, Quentin and I and Kerry, we wanted to protect Kerry Washington.”

“Why? Because movies are forever. Meaning that if there is some bombastic scene, you can’t take it out and it’s forever and you can clip it out of context,” Foxx, 58, added.

The Oscar winner said he “wanted to make sure that we protected Olivia Pope” — although Washington’s career-defining series, “Scandal,” wasn’t out yet.

“I said, ‘Hey, she’s going to have this show and we want to protect her,’ and [Tarantino] was with it. So all of that sort of outlandish stuff left,” Foxx shared.

The “Jamie Foxx Show” alum said he expressed to Tarantino, 63, that “his woman” wasn’t in the script enough and the “Pulp Fiction” director immediately made changes.

“Quentin goes, ‘Yeah, it’s an omelette. It’s an omelette and all these ingredients. I’m going to throw some more of Broomhilda.’ So in the movie, when you watch it, those scenes where Kerry Washington is sort of in his eyes — that wasn’t in the script,” Foxx recalled.

“He placed Kerry Washington to make sure it was the through line. So that Django was a guy going to get love in the worst circumstance,” he shared.

Foxx praised Tarantino for being so “accommodating.”

“Django Unchained” follows the story of an enslaved man who trains under a German bounty hunter with the ultimate goal of reuniting with his wife.

The film faced controversy over the use of the N-word, which was said over 100 times, and the extensive violence that was depicted against the slaves.

Despite the criticism, “Django Unchained” grossed nearly $450 million worldwide and became Tarantino’s highest-grossing film.

The film also became the highest-grossing Western film of all time, having surpassed the 1990 film “Dances with Wolves.”
