Jennifer Carpenter Reveals If She Will Return for Upcoming Dexter: Resurrection Series (Exclusive)

Jennifer Carpenter says her time within the Dexter universe has come to an end.
While attending the premiere for season 2 of 1923 in Los Angeles on Feb. 19, the actress, 45, said she has no plans to reprise her role of Debra Morgan in the upcoming Dexter: Resurrection series after she originated the part in Dexter and reprised it for the 2021 limited series, Dexter: New Blood.
“I am pretty focused where I am, and I feel like I’ve completed that box. I’m proud of it,” Carpenter, who stars as U.S. Deputy Marshal Mamie Fossett in the Yellowstone prequel series, told PEOPLE exclusively.
“I hope that they’re having a wonderful time,” she continued, referring to the cast and crew working on the upcoming Showtime project, adding: “And I’m so happy for the fans to have more to chew on.”

Dexter followed Michael C. Hall as Dexter Morgan, a Miami Metro Police Department blood pattern analyst who investigates murders in the homicide division while also secretly killing criminals who have escaped the justice system. The show received numerous awards during its run, including four Emmy Awards, two Golden Globe Awards and a Screen Actors Guild Award.
Carpenter starred opposite Hall, 54, in all 96 episodes of Dexter from 2006 to 2013, portraying the adoptive sister of his character. In the show’s series finale, Carpenter’s Debra is taken off life support after she is shot and suffers a stroke from a blood clot.

The first Dexter spinoff series, Dexter: New Blood, aired from November 2021 to January 2022 and saw Hall reprise his role. Then, Dexter: Original Sin, a prequel series that followed a young Dexter, began airing in late 2024 and wrapped earlier this month. (Hall served as a narrator for that show.)
Carpenter starred as Debra again in Dexter: New Blood, though as an imaginary presence that Hall’s Dexter often communicates with. Dexter: Resurrection, which was announced at Comic-Con in 2024, meanwhile, will serve as a sequel series to Dexter: New Blood and will take place in the present day, per Variety.
Carpenter’s Debra was a police officer in Dexter, and in 1923, the actress portrays another law enforcement character.
“I don’t know why I get pulled in that direction, but it’s interesting,” Carpenter told PEOPLE of playing cop characters. “But I feel like if my career is going to go in that direction, I should probably fill this space in.”
And though she said that she “was a little nervous” to portray Fossett in 1923, Carpenter called the role “probably my favorite of my whole career, and I’ve been doing it almost since I’ve been alive.”
Season 2 of 1923 is set to premiere on Paramount+ on Feb. 23, while Dexter: Resurrection is aiming for a summer 2025 air date.
