NEED TO KNOW

  • Jesse Metcalfe passed on auditioning for Adrian Grenier’s role in Entourage because he thought the pilot was “stupid”
  • Entourage ran for eight seasons and won six Emmy awards
  • Metcalfe admits to PEOPLE that he now takes auditions for almost everything

Jesse Metcalfe learned a valuable lesson after skipping an Entourage audition early in his career.

During the 12th Annual Luxury Luncheon in Southampton, N.Y., on July 26, hosted by Jill Zarin and Tickets2Events, Metcalfe spoke with PEOPLE exclusively about the one role he regrets not taking seriously.

“I had an audition for Entourage, and I read the pilot episode, and I was like, ‘This is stupid,’ and I didn’t go to the audition,” the 46-year-old actor shares.

“Obviously, I had no idea what I was talking about,” he continues. “That ended up being an iconic show that I absolutely love, and definitely wish I was a part of.”

The John Tucker Must Die actor shares that he was “auditioning for Adrian Grenier’s role” as the show’s protagonist, Vincent Chase.

“I blew that one. Sometimes you gotta say no, but that was the wrong one,” he adds. “It taught me that I don’t know everything.”

When HBO premiered Entourage in July 2004, it quickly became a cultural phenomenon as viewers became enamored with Chase, an emerging A-lister, and his group of childhood friends.

Created by Doug Ellin and loosely based on Mark Wahlberg’s early experiences in the entertainment industry, the series ran for eight seasons from 2004 to 2011. During its run, Entourage amassed numerous awards, including 14 Golden Globe nominations and 26 Emmy nominations, winning six.

Grenier also reprised the character for a feature film in 2015.

Along with Grenier, the series also featured actors Kevin Connolly, Kevin Dillon, Jerry Ferrara and Jeremy Piven, who played Chase’s inner circle of friends and management team.

Metcalfe says the miscalculation made him “absolutely” more “likely to audition” for roles even if he isn’t sure about the script or if it’s the right fit.

“I’ve been auditioning for what it feels like is everything lately,” he adds.

Metcalfe recently revealed another audition mishap during an episode of Tori Spelling’s misSPELLING podcast, where he talked about the time he tried to get cast as a vampire.

The Nutrl Skin founder revealed that he auditioned for The Vampire Diaries, which ultimately ran on the CW from 2009 to 2017, but was turned away for a surprising reason.

“’I’ll never forget, a really high-up executive at CW was like, ‘You could never play a vampire because you have too nice of a face.’ That’s what she said to me. She said, ‘You look like too nice of a guy to play a vampire.’ ”

“I’m not really that nice,” Metcalfe joked with Spelling. “I got a lot of edge.”
